Here is progress so far. Im wondering if I am getting to detailed early on for a building. Mostly with some of the smaller details in the trim. My aim is to keep the count around current engine such as source guidlines.
currently at 1646 triangles 957 polys.

found a top down view and its 8 sided
on the bright side. I can remake it twice as fast.

I do have a question though about the scene and enviromental modeling in general.
How do you guys go about breaking up the elements of a scene? What are some basic guidlines to use when determining what will be part of a single object.
In the case of the lighthouse my approach is going to be to have the base of the lighthouse , top of lighthouse, side building, side building roof, and chimney as seperate objects each with there own texture.
I had considered multisubing this one but I want to use some ambient occlusion and hand paint the grime so it doesnt repeat.
Still considering to double up some of the side though the octagon is broken into 4 sections that repeat.
