Actually Verse has many more uses than just networked modeling.
The same feature that makes it possible to connect say 3DSmax to Blender, also makes it possible to connect different applications on the same PC (just use the home ip to connect). You can for example paint a skin in GIMP (with the GIMP verse plugin) and it automaticly updates in realtime in Blender (without any importing/exporting etc).
Oh, and FYI, I am going to try and set up one of these servers either on nibbler (polycount game server) or on my machine at home so you folks can give it a whirl. I am hoping (read: HOPING) that I will be able to get it done tonight, however, I am REALLY tired already today and I have class as soon as I get off work til 8:30 at which point I may just drive home, lay on my bed and sleep for about 14 hours. I shall update as I know. XD
It's truly awesome, I'm hoping for future handling of multiple versedriven clients, like blender, 3dsmax, and maya all sharing polygonal models with the same verse-server.
Ahhh, come on... we both know you can only resist the urge by utilizing extreme mental self control and months of training (by a tibetanian super monk)
Naah, he's changed obsessions. I've had a phase where I would model all kinds of dragons (before I came to polycount, I think) and look where I am now.
I can only see bad things coming of this at a workplace. You're sitting at your desk working on a character model, the boss walks in, and suddenly you realize someone else in the office has just extruded some nasty bits onto your model... at least that's what I'd expect to happen if you were workin with Earthquake.
<boss walks in>
<you turn around as he comes up to your desk>
boss:"Ummmm.......why?" as he points to the screen
As you look you see every limb of the character has somehow transformed into a large phallus, evidence of some basic texturing is also present.
Actually, a note to Max users - the plugin link JKMakowka posted is an old version which doesn't work with 3dsmax7+
A newer Max 7/8 working release is included with the Verse full Windows download found here - http://uni-verse.org/uploads/media/setup.exe (5mb)
This weekend turned out to be more of a challenge then I could have imagined and I apologize. It also seems that nibbler (the up-to-recently Polycount game server) has vanished.
I am still going to try and get a server up and moving, just be patient. =]
Note for people using the Max version of Verse - I dunno how other apps handle it, but with the Max plugin, every time someone modifies an object in the scene, it gets converted to a "verse object" (essentially a different editable mesh), so you have to convert it back to EMesh to continue working on it.
This means it's probably better suited to people working on different objects in the same scene, rather than the same object, which seems like it just won't work.
I'd be interested to see how Blender handles it.
hey i tried this with a friend today in max 8 but we couldn't get it working, and the documentation for it is not available online. Can anyone give a heads up with step by step instructions on how to get it working? thx.
steady: Someone needs to run the "verse server" included in the link I posted previously... then you have the plugin in your /plugins folder in your max directory, start Max and look in the Utilities tab, select "More..." and choose "Verse" from that list. Then type the IP address of the server you're connecting to (localhost is fine if it's yourself running the server), click connect and it'll automatically load any objects already existing on the Verse server.
Guess it's useful for working with two or more people if you don't want to split roles into "I model and you texture". Also useful for realtime tutorials and teaching.

hey guys, does this have any use or is it just a novelty tool? sounds fun

As I said earlier, the main feature of Verse isn't networked modeling but realtime interaction between different applications (2D and 3D apps or rendering engines/games etc).

I may have to learn blender for this...

From the looks of it you can do this with any program that has a verse plugin

Yea, but what program has a verse plugin? I dont think max or maya has one...
I know blender, so maybe we can hook up and make some super awesome thing.

I am sure you ment to say super awesome gargoyle right?
Edit: Here is a verse plugin for 3dsmax:

But learn Blender anyways, it has become an awesome program lately!
lookin forward to the collabs we'll come up with

Well, seeing I last did one in february... highly unlikely

A polycount hosted server would be incredible.

A chuckle from across the room....
Thanks for the max plugin link too, JKMakowka.
It'll be interesting to see the results of this.
Also, I'm wondering what happens if multiple people try moving the same vertex at the same time
wierd.
I'm looking forward to this.

Yeah, it seems like it would be a really valuble teaching tool.

But does someone still have this file? The download link seems to be dead.
Thanks in advance
