Scroll down for the finished character.
Ok, decided to get back to some lowpoly lovin. Made this guy yesterday. Going to uvmap and start texturing him up today.
steady - I see what you mean with the feet. If it bothers me while I'm texturing him I'll raise them a lil bit... easy enough. Thank btw
tremulant - sorry to disappoint... maybe later?!?! LOL
I was a little preoccupied with celebrating my 24th birthday yesterday. BTW, have bday acknowledgments on this board been deactivated? I wasn't listed I usually calculate how popular I am by the amount of people posting "happy bday" to me in a thread dedicated to the day in which I was born! hehe. Anyway, I finally got started on the texturing today. Here's where I'm going with the face texture (obviously still very WIP).
character - Thanks. I honestly think it looks a bit muddy and dull right now. I just wanted to post and show you all where I'm going with the design. So as far as hints/tips go, just start texturing and stop halfway through. LOL
If you want some real tips, than just study textures from people you admire. And concerning modeling, study the topology of good character models. That's how I learned (still learn).
Great start to the Rogue character dude. I personally would have given him dual daggers or something instead of a sword with finger/fist protector (yes, thats the technical term for it ). Doesn't seem to be a proficient enough swordsman having lost an eye, hehe.
I like the face texture so far, I know its WIP so I won't crit too harshly. I'll agree with you in the part that its looking a little dull (but only in the colour sense of things). The detail on the face is great, once a bit of colour variation goes in, it'll be sweet! I'm digging the detail around the eye the most.
Keep it up!
caseyjones - personally I didn't want a simple sword. I think I was just thinking of the Rogue I played in Dungeons and Dragons Online. I had a Rapier and a dagger. And about the eyepatch, I think it's cool... simple as that. And in reality he'd be less proficiant but it doesn't affect any character with an eyepatch in any other mmorpg. Actually I think rogues that where an eyepatch in WOW actually get some type of bonus from it. I may be wrong though. It's been a LONG time since I played that game.
I haven't touched the face texture since my last post, but I have started on the body. The black areas on the rogues left-arm sleeve are suppose to be transparent.... here's what I got so far.
I was making a joke at him being a poor swordsmen, thus the eyepatch (lost it in a sword fight). Not that the eyepatch would make him a poor swordsmen.
But yeah, it was just a suggestion about the daggers. In the end it is your model and your choice.
But its coming along great.

Well, either way you're right. Realistically he wouldn't be as fantastic with only one eye... plus he only has one eye, so obviously he's not the best. LoL. Anyway, thanks man
Hey Lou! nice model=)
I like:
Head, glove texture parts is very good to me.
U could fix that:
whole texture contrast, add some highlights to metall, sharp folds on cloth. And i don't really like pattern on red thing on his left hand.
anyway, cool.
From the 3/4 view, not having any hair planes on the back of the head, gives away it's low poly solid nature. I'd try to round it off a bit, and add another row of hair planes so that it breaks the silhouette from 3/4. Good use of hair planes otherwise.
Color usage on his outfit is weird. It doesn't seem to have a strong theme, and deep crimson/pink of the arm guard is totally out of place. I'd either reuse it elsewhere, or use one of the other colors there.
Contrast on his outfit is extremely shallow. He reads as very muddy, especially from the waist down. Presenting him on a darker background could help, but I'd suggest expanding the value range, and hit it with a few hot specular highlights in key places.
The face came out really nice, and I'm digging the soft volumes overall.
Congrats, Skrubbles, this one came out great! The face is superb.
The arms strike me as the weakest part of the character. The FFX esque sleeve looks out of place, and the other arm is rather dull. Nothing wrong, they just don't seem to be on par with the rest of the model.
not sure I'd call it finished. The colour values are very bland, no real shadows or highlights.
not digging the chest plate, it's very out of place. It doesn't appear to be large enough for any form of protection, also it appears to be floating on his torso, not visibly attached by any means - one would guess that such a bit of armour would be rather heavy.
Cool stuff dude! I'd say, I wouldnt call it finish just yet, Its missing 1 more step atleast.
All your values are pretty much the same. You need to sharpen up certain area, You dont have enough stronger dark area, or stronger highlight area, they are all the same.Use colors to accentuate thoses values. MEH, I hate explaning!
Buzz me when u see me on msn, and Ill do a quick example if u want.!
I think its a Great model, Very original, and just with 1900 tris u have done a excelente job. Also im in favor of u give some more contrast to the texture (not on the face). Congrats!
I have to echo the others' sentiments on more light/dark range though, everywhere but the face needs a lot more, sharper shadow and highlight values. At the moment it's all stuck in the midtones, and doesn't pop out the way it should to really make the implied depth believable.
hey the piece is lookin great. but I agree with the others that I think its needs a little more polishing to be called finished. the texture just really does not pop yet.
also with the chest piece, it seems a little bit out of place because its the only seemingly metal piece on this character. so I would maybe take that type of metal plating you made for the chest and maybe carry it on to perhaps a thigh guard, or some kind of shin guard. but just in general carry that metal armor plating in to some other area's because its just reading very random at the moment.
other then that, great work it is lookin awsome.
edit: adding that metal plate might make the most sense if you added it to his left arm to carry on that feeling of his blocking arm that it has right now...but it also might throw off the balance a bit so play around with it.
Askhat- Thanks. I agree about some of the highlighting stuff... though I do like the red pattern (that's why I painted it in
poopinmymouth - I might be making some quick fixes to the texture... highlights, and some hair alpha fixes. Glad you like the face.
Zcubed - Thanks. About the arms, I like 'em that way *shrug*. But everyone's entitled to their own opinion... as long as you like the rest of the model/texture. Thanks for saving me My life is now complete LoL
hawken - Might go back and fix highlights and whatnot. The chest area is actually attached to the leather that's strapped around the character. I'd put bolts, but I don't want it to look like it's bolted into his chest... because that'd hurt.
b1ll - HELP ME BE GOOD! haha. Seriously, I agree. Look at the pick below and tell me if I'm still being stupid (there's a good chance I am).
ultra - Thanks... look below
MoP - Thanks man. I have to echo my reply to the others. I did a paintover below. Hopefully this'll look better to you all.
dkorch - Sorry, I like the chestplate and where things are placed... that's why I put 'em there in the first place. This is just a model for fun in my free time but I think I will atleast fix some lighting stuff... because I don't want it to look muddy. Other than that, glad you like.
OK, I did a paintover of one of my screencaps. Let me know if I'm going in the right direction with the highlights and shadows. Don't won't to overblow the texture with too many highlights... but just the right amount. Let the crits continue.
hm..i would give it some more strong highlights and fix the b«clothing, right now it doesnt seem like folds, use more dark color to define fold depth and slight highlight . Still a solid piece
character - Thanks. Well they were easy changes and were pointed out a lot so I might as well take a few minutes to fix it and have the model look better.
Ooghijmiqtxxa - (had to copy&paste that name) Thank you
hawken - There's a difference. It's not drastic. Just some small highlight/shadow stuff.
b1ll - Thanks for taking the time to do that man. I'll talk to you in a few minutes.

zenarion - just for fun
unless he is going to be bearfoot or wearing socks, I'd raise the height of the shoe's toe just a tad.
this is quite inspiring! sweet new website btw.
tremulant - sorry to disappoint... maybe later?!?! LOL
