In Switzerland we all have to serve at the swiss military for 10 years, 21 weeks at the beginning and then 3 weeks every year for the next 9 years.
I used to be an outdoor pioneer for the last 3 years. Until someone from the military called me and asked me if I was interested in doing animations and models for the Army instead. I was invited to a job interview and they accepted me smile.gif Now I don't have to train in the mud anymore, I can do the models at home. And the coolest thing is: they even let me take plenty of reference pictures from all the tanks and aircrafts the swiss army is using. This Friday is my first photosession, yay.
I'm really excited about it and I hope it's a good addition to my resume too

sounds cool, and with the swiss being neutral you can be pretty safe of not needing to make photosessions of killed and destroyed stuff wink.gif

Yeah, can't wait for "The Swiss Army" featuring the Unreal3 engine as a free download to lure people to join them... wait did you say you all have to serve? laugh.gif

Sounds like a cool job (much better than mud diving at least)... is it just for those 3 weeks a year?

Right now you have to if you're healthy enough (So no swiss army game for a while). You can do community service instead, but you have to prove you couldn't serve the army while having a clear conscience. But this will propably change within the next couple of years.
Yes, it's just for the 3 weeks a year smile.gif

Cool, dude! it's good that the Army can use your skills! I knew a swiss guy in games production who was a fully trained sniper - came in handy for research..

That's awesome you get to flex your 3D skills while serving your country. One of my colleagues was a scout sniper in Iraq pt. I, then became a bounty hunter, now an engineer, and another was a special forces guy, now a database programmer. Both of these guys looooove BF1942 and are better than anyone I've ever seen online.

Awesome stuff man. smile.gif I did some animation for the Canadian military last summer. Can be pretty darn cool.

Is this like a full time job or do you just do it as they need it?

My dad has been bugging me about doing this exact same thing for the US for years and years. Join the Army and get into their simulations division. Make their 3D models and get to play with all of their extremely high-tech VR toys. I have to admit - it does sound pretty cool.

Can you post the images (per permission first)? Im sure many a people would find closeups informative when building models for military games.

Yeah, whenever I animate weapons I'm glad I was in the military. And it was even an advantage once when I applied for a job.

Neat, what was your job there? smile.gif Promotion material? It's not fulltime, just a couple of weeks a year until I'm done with my military days.

unfortunately I'm not gonna work with stuff like that. But I heard of similar stuff for weapon training in the swiss army. I hope I'll be working on different tasks the next years, hopefully something like this too!

    I'm gonna ask them!

    Why?

You mean why you have to prove it or why it's going to change?

    I hope I won't miss these days wink.gif

Sort of. It was a base with a lot of high end research stuff, so when scientists had something they want to research they need to sell the idea to the higher ups to get funding. WHen they do that they like to have animations and illustrations done, so I did the animations for it. Kind of neat to think that the head of the military watched some of my animations. smile.gif

Anyways, yea, that sounds like an awesome opportunity for you. For a couple weeks a year you get some great resume padding and experience. smile.gif
