I have a laptop. A fujitsu.siemens. Thats the only pc i have.
What i want is to buy a Desktop computer.
What's your spending limit? I just got done buying components for a new PC myself. My new rig topped off just under $2200.
One thing i would loveeeeee was to have a dell monitor. one of those big ass screens. But i dont think i can get them here in portugal.
They ARE damn nice, though
For reference, here's my new+ system w/prices:
Intel Conroe E6600
$389
BFG Geforce7950GX2
$580
2GB Corsair PC6400
$220
2xWestern Digital 250GB HDD's - $150
Asus P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe mobo - $255
BenQ DVD burner
$30
Thermaltake ToughPower 650w --- $130
Thermaltake Black Armor case -- $140
Misc (coolers, OS, etc)
$250
Total: $2,144
I'm using a BenQ 20.1in 16:10 monitor. It's only $300, and well worth it. I wasn't expecting much from it, but it's far and away better than most LCD's I've used.
The E6600 has a MSRP of only $315. But getting it early (during shortages) costs a little premium. Wait a few weeks and it will be $330 or so.
Err, well you can't build a laptop yourself, as far as I'm aware.

Not to jack the thread or anything! Just an FYI!
Nvidia is the way to go, but the soon to be available 7900GS should have a much better price/performance ratio. It really depends on your budget though, the 7900GS is more of a low cost alternative at an expected price of about $250.
PS.: Modern PCs can be quite loud and annying when working, keep that in mind and try to get stuff with better coolers Gigabyte is currently making mighty fine passivly cooled Mainboards and GPUs.
PPS.: The intel CPU and the new Nvidia GFX cards are a lot more energy efficient than earlier versions. Make a quick watts calulation of your system before buying a PSU. I think 650W is really hugely overpowered for these new energy efficient computers. Something along 400W should do it (not sure how much these SLI GPUs need) and your powerbill will thank you (*bling* and the enviroment *bling* )
It's fuckin fast!
i dont even know what a Intel Conroe E6600.
it's the processor right? whats the speed of that?
The Intel Conroe is a CPU, yes. It runs at 2.4ghz stock, but people have overclocked it (stable, and on air cooling) to 3.2ghz or more. Keep in mind though that even at STOCK speed - it outperforms AMD's FX-62 chip.

so.. i was checking out prices as stuff, and came across core2duo and dual core. dual core has faster speeds and is cheaper. while core2duo is slower and higher prices. im guessing that despite having slower speeds.. the core2duo is better right?

regarding monitors.. what do you think is best? CRT? LCD? im more into LCD since they take up less space and nowadays they look just as good as crt ones. is panoramic better that 4:3? whats your pick? i saw this 20" samsung monitor that cost like 400$. what do you think?

Correct, it is a different architecture, so it'll have different clock speeds, though the one with the slower clock speed may actually be a faster processor because of the different build.

Is a good site to read.
Great tech site with a heap of good info and professionals.
Anyone here giving you advise not knowing what you want to use the computer for might be giving you bad advise.
Right now im using the laptop as my main computer to do everything i need (coding, webdesigning, 3d). since i dont anything else. Gamewise. laptops sucks. at least mine does.
Since im a bit of coder as well. i thought of using the laptop only for coding projects and small graphic works and use the desktop when i need to do something larger.

1920x1080 resolution, 5ms response time, $184 each
two of these will do:

Just thought I'd add this in, I recently got a Hanns-G 19" widescreen, and it is great!
5ms is pretty tight though.
well, i have two 19" monitors, one that runs at 1920x1080, and one at 1440x900, and I have to say I like the 1440x900 a lot better. everything is too tiny at 1920x1080
It's $280, and has a res of 1680x1050. 600:1 contrast. 5ms seek time as well. It's not too bad. Better than I expected.
