Pixelblocks

My girlfriend suprised me the other day with a big box of pixelblocks she got from a toy store.

I'm sure some of you have seen or used these before. I was quite excited to mess around with them but was very disappointed to find that they really don't join together will at all (much the complete opposite of what every other site, blog, etc. out there claims from other users). For me, they all seem to slide right off from one another soon as they're not laying flat on the table.
Anyone know how folks manage to keep them together with anything other than house of cards stability? I am reluctant to glue them...
