A.K.A. All the Human Photo reference.
Has anyone ever used this sites resources on a game title that has shipped. And if so, was there any legal implictions?
Due to the fact that there "legally" not in the confines of the U.S. are legal dept. had a coniption over using there site.
So just thought I'd ask around and see if anybody else had used them and/or had any info on the subjet.
Thanks

Brad

the purpose of 3d.sk is to pay them to use the stuff,, you are free to sell your works made from it any way you want. i've used its resources on several games that have been shipped, its fine and legal, unless things have changed

What you can't do is re-distribute those photos, either as sets or individually. They're designed to be a reference for a final 3d product. You can make a 3d model using one of the figure sets, and use that photo source exclusively for texture mapping if you want, and the final result is still 100% legally yours.

You'd probably run into problems if you used some of the 'wrap around' heads in the 'premium content' raw, so that others could lift that image out of your game files, but that would be a silly thing to do.

Of course, no-one would lift a head directly from 3d.sk, we all all mix and match and photofit the textures. Don't we?

yeah, I've used the pics off of 3dsk, for quite a while, just for some odd reason are legal department wants, " Proof". Which I thought was in the royalte free statment and in there contract. Bu, I'm just trying to make a case for it.
    Appreciate the responces guys

I am having the same issue with "legal" as well. Did you come up with any resolution?

    Thanks

that site pisses me off. its slooooow as shit, and horribly catalogued. they need to do some serious rework to that site to speed it up.

I used it for about a year, and found that there really wasn't enough variety in terms of worth while reference for me.
There are tons of models in different colors and shapes, but all in the same poses. Good for modeling over in the background, but I really didn't want to directly copy any of their models anyway.

Whenever I found myself trying to concept out some action pose, and needed some better idea of how one or another part bent or folded, I was kinda out of luck. So I unsubscribed.

Your Art Director really needs to push on Legal, then. I am pretty sure all of the major companies use it (I know EA and Sony both use it). If the tight-asses in RedWood have agreed to the EULA, I'm sure legal at your place isn't looking hard enough (which means they probably weren't leaned on hard enough by the right people... legal takes a strong request from an AD much differently than a usual request from a random artist).
