Those don't look like spinners to me, they look like standard 5-spoke wheels with massive brake rotors behind them.
[edit] that just made me think... it doesn't really make sense to use all the polys to boolean the vent holes in the rotors, and then not even model the calipers. I mean, huge brake rotors aren't going to do you much good if you don't have some calipers to clamp down on them
Have been working on this a bit more tonght, I can't seem to catch skizot on IRC, so here's a quick post just to give this thread a bump and a little update.
It's still early days, and I'm still trying to figure whether to stick to the reference and inlcude all the ladders etc for the cab, or to keep it simple as it is so far.

i really like the style of this, except the stretch seems a bit rudimentary. Would it not be better with the lights balanced out some?

CMB, Keyser: those rims are WAY temp. i kidnapped them for scale and am making some low poly ones.
notman: not showing your age, i kinda thought of them when i started and then came across a site with some good cartoon drawings that fit this style.
updated with a skin and envmap. it's going to about HALF this size ingame. do the details won't be as evil.

and the wheels turn just fine.
and i haven't seen any model kits but i'm gonna go look now.
