info on max 9 is out, 64 bit for free, just a seperate exe, lots of little improvements here and there,HUGE prefomace increase when working with dense meshes, there is no end all feature it seams, havent watched the videos yet tho, about to.. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=5659302&siteID=123112
just curious.. how much of a performance increase on x64 versions do you see if you have under 2 gig of ram?? (i heard that if you have under 2 its practically pointless to go 64-bit)
Maya got more features yep, max only the 64 bits support, because the other things added... Pro booleans was included in max 8 with a downloable installer.
I'm wondering how much perfomance will bring us this new version of max.
i am assuming future releases will have more features, the whole acqusistion of maya i am sure threw a few wrenches in the development of both packages. not too much on either end to upgrade for, save for the new polytools in maya, really that was the only part of maya that really pissed me off.
The option to replace Maya's Viewport renderer with one that can handle alpha mapping, texture display and vertex lighting without any of the irritating issues that come with the out-of-the-box version might make it be worth the upgrade. Nothing else there strikes me as particularly useful for my needs.
I think what may have happend is what i was kind of afraid of when Autodesk announced they acquired Maya, which is now that the two big competitors are owned by the same company they are no longer having to come up with interesting features to lure potential customers to their product. Really it seems like this is a pretty weak upgrade for both prodcuts
I was hoping for a near perfect native format exporter between the packages. Sounds like the new display abilities are the best feature. It's like getting underwear for Christmas.
The ability to gut Maya's viewport renderer is definately the best feature in Maya 8. Atleast for game artists. Now what you see in Maya, could be what you actually see in game. The Max poly tools seem nice, though I've never used Max enough to rely on non Maya tools. But, I'm excited to check them out. I really think when they add crap like Poke Hole as a new tool and make a big deal out of that it's a tad overrated. I feel like some years Maya is like Madden. It's just new rosters and uniforms.
wait, max 9 is 64 bit.... does that mean its not 32bit anymore? i run on 1gig of ram and a 1.8ghz processor (yes i know its crap)... so, i guess my chances of getting max 9 are close to nothing??

Max 9s new feature should be a rework of the UI.

Amazing, they managed to add an interface to an already existing feature.
I hope Autodesk keeps R&D a high priority.

Really? Wow, so much for one of the main features that made Max 9 appealing (to me at least)

Well, At Siggraph they showed it running 12 million polys without any trouble.
