that image just highlights how low-detailed and unrealistic the HL2 graphics are, even though when they were released everyone was talking about how realistic they looked
I agree MoP, I recently played through it again with the high def texture pack, but its still really noticable how grainy quiet a few of the textures are, as well as if you're paying attention, there's quite a bit of bad texture seams...check out the sides of Alyx's hands! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v627/Fev3r/HL2/Alyx.jpg

[/ QUOTE ]That was the one thing that just made me laugh about the game... I've yet to get it but a friend of mine showed it to me running in 1280x1024 on his rig and I couldn't help but say "it's all just barearsed square brush blocks with photos stuck on top of them"... thank fully he wasn't so much of a fan boy to not see what I was talking about. And that's not even making mention of the pixelated textures....!
Even the terrain I saw was little more than low polycount trisouped brushwork that had very little detail to it. Effin' fanboyz.
Well, I'm not saying HL2 looks bad, I mean some segments of the game are gorgeous, and a lot of the design is really nice. Even when you're playing, in the context of the game, it all looks "realistic" ... just when you put it next to something that's ACTUALLY real does it highlight how far from that the graphics are...
I jsut got through playing HL2 for the first time now, and I'll step up and say I thought it looked pretty sweet. I'm making that assessment on the color design, space design, lighting, and overall style.
I'll agree that their textures weren't particularly hi-res and that there were some UV stretches, but I hardly think that is a basis to trash the artwork across a whole game.

[/ QUOTE ]I wasn't trashing the game per say but the fan-boyish reaction to everything being 'uber cool' and 'realistic'; it's not looked at in the right context...
For the most part peoples general assessment of the artwork (and I'm still taking about the fanboys here who get into those silly arsed "Source is the best engine eva" discussions) is based on that fact that Valve made heavy use of textures based on materials with known visual qualities - concrete is concrete - which result in them being less critical overall of what they see because they make an assumption about what they see based on what they know.
It's the same naive basis on which they then judge other games that aren't based on 'realistic' artwork (WoW anyone?), a comparison of similar textures with the same physical attributes has the non real looking "completely crap" and the real looking "ok, but low res".
That's what I was getting at; of course it looks good, but it's no better (or worse) than any other equivalent AAA title.
Personally I think that HL2 is gorgeous for the most part yes, but only as the sum of its parts. Its extremely well Art directed.
However, in terms of making good, clean game Art, some of the individual assets are positively heinous, and incredibly sloppy. Oftentimes in the game, things look great in the distance, but fall apart close up. In that respect, I think its overrated, and Valve have stuff to learn.
What I find interesting is that games are getting real enough now that people have to take a second look to make sure it is a screenshot instead of a photo. Pretty cool really. I remember this shot looking awesome 6 years ago.

Anyone remember how awesomely 'real' Duke Nukem 3d was at the time? :P

Wasn't the only advancement of duke 3d the ability to look up, which was pretty amazing at the time

duke3d's biggies were the personality and destructive environment. ROTT, Cyclones, Marathon and Heretic all had lookup/down functions all around the end of 1994.
mop: id still like to see a screenshot from a realtime game that looks photorealistic. there are none. everything looks weak compared to a realworld scene

That's because you're only judging the visuals. HL2 also achieves realism in other aspects that many games have failed to reach. Taking it all as a whole, HL2 is the most realistic gameplay experience.

Where abouts in wales do you use them to catch sheep? Where I was from we only used them to lift heavy crates, I thought HL2 was particually realistic in that respect.

I doubt they would light anything in HL3 so artlessly anyway.
They're from this guy's photos of a subway/underground thing in Russia, I believe.
Woah, screw Crytek!!!

Of course, if guns lifting heavy crates with magic or alien invasions seem particularly realistic to you...

When you have the urge to post something like that...punch yourself in the face instead.
And what's up with respawning. That's not realistic at all.
