how do I get dx shaders to work?

So i'm wanting to try messing with the dx shaders in max, but I'm not sure how to get it to work. heres what shows up on my mat. editor. ne help would be great.

At the bottom, go to 'Choose Driver' and make sure you choose the DirecX 9.0 and the Hardware direct3d device.
Of course, make sure you're using a card that supports DX9, and have your drivers, and DirectX versions up to date.
