gosh theres a whole host of gay stereotypes in that promo vid. I dont even know where to start... musclemen, businessmen, cowboys, army guys, gasmasks.... looks fabulous.
awesome... this is how Quake 2 back in the day felt to me.. a cartoon stylized realism.. not the photorealism that every developer out there is trying and failing to achieve.

it's really good to see valve FINALLY making a game that looks visually interesting. Up to this point I'd only really looked forward to seeing their technology in action. Bravo to valve for making such an artisticly unique and attractive game. Lets hope all the other aspects of the final game are as well polished.
I dunno, this is a big move away from the original QWTF feeling, and I was super hardcore about that. After watching this, I feel like I was watching a cartoony Pixar remake in the world of "The Invincibles." I realize they are breathing new life into this with such different designs, but I will miss the good ole days of same player model, different skin. I wonder if the hardcore-ed-ness of this game will reach the level of back in the day, hopefully it will not be too different from the original game play, and if clans will pop up and tournaments etc. I miss the intro video of QWTF with the opera music.
Portal looks awwwwsuuummm.
I really dont see what all the fuss is about here, they have a toon shader, wow. Thats amazing, i've never ever seen that before. Thats so fucking next gen it makes my eyes bleed.
Seeing ashow QWTF was just the quake textures with the classes and weapons, I am really digging the look that was set in the teaser vid. The music even made it feel more like The Incredibles, but I liked that movie. And with the rim lighting that Episode 1 added it makes it pop more as a style with the simplicity rather than trying to save time making super detailed grunge textures.
I'm really happy that they took such a departure with TF2. The original was Quake + TF, TFC was HL + TF, and TF2 was also turning into the same thing. Since now there is Battlefield and Enemy Territory out there and BF2142 and QW:ET coming I think I'd be more likely to get something that looks interesting as opposed to something that looks 'omg real'.
i agree, the "realistic" class based online genre is getting to saturated ... i dont think team fortress ever meant to take itself seriously, it was all about unique classes, teamwork and replay value .. i too support this style direction .. it's very refresing to see next gen tech combined with an unconventional art direction ..

Dear Idiot,
If you are going to wallow in your own douchebaggery, please do not drag us into it. That is all.

Personally, I'm getting quite sick of all of the shooter games trying to look all cool and hardcore. This is a welcome departure in my boat. TFC wasn't about realism. I mean come on, spies dropping hallucenogenic pill capsules? Medics spreading plague? Players launching themselve hundreds of yards with concussion grenades?
It wasn't realistic. It was FUN. The style that Valve is rolling with here fits the gameplay style quite well.

Stoof, little uncalled for don't you think?
EQ, you obviously weren't a fan of the original TF (or TFC) otherwise you'd 'get' the excitement of seeing where Valve has taken Team Fortress.

I was excited 7 years ago when they were showing off TF2, now they slap on a toon shader and some exagerated proportions and you guys all crap your paints. I just dont get it, i guess you cant really explain fanboy-ism tho.
i think the times have changed EQ .. at a time when online military shooters werent rampant, an old tf2 direction looked really promising .. now we have BF, QuakeWars and a dozen other mediocre titles trying to cash in on the market ...
This kind of art style feels refreshing and well timed ... looking at it know the old tf2 direction wasnt a good representation of TF
Holy shit, where are the ooze dripping vaginas with bio mechanical tubes rammed in them? Where is the swat team dudes? And most of all, where is my have-to-pack-every-square-inch-with-shit art design? Don't these guys know what a game is supposed to look like?
also, i dont think it looks as simple as slapping a toon shader .. it works together as a package, the stylistic proportions, the shaders, the lighting, the textures.. ..
Wow thanks for reminding me exactly why i dont post much in GD. Its imposible to say anything without people assuming 17 other things. You people act like im trying to change your opinion, im mearly saying that it dosent do much for me. Never once did I suggest that I would rather see any sort of art style that seems to be the current industry cliche right now. Simply addressing the claim that "This is how next gen should be done" or whatever has been said by a few people is an assanine statement because this shit has been done since JSRF and probablly even before that(stylized cartoony stuff).
Fuse: Yeah i wasn't suggesting i wanted them to keep the look of the old TF2, just that the time has come and passed for me to be excited about this game.

This is interesting since you called people fanboys simply because they state that the style is nice and refreshing. Yeah there's a whole lot of retartedness goin on in this thread and i'm not sure what it says about our industry or this community when people are chastized for liking something that has style, and tons of character.
i remember when everyone knocked wind waker for being too different looking and prey being knocked for being too "gimmicky" with portals, and then we look at portal and team fortess 2,
lol
The teaser is interesting (it even has the old tf clank sound) though it's not as good as the epic action-packed promo intro of the first TF.
i think anyone with a brain can see that this is much more than just slapping a toon shader on something, and calling it next gen. the shaders in general in this look great, and if the lighting actualy repersents what the game will look like, then it is trully impressive.. the quality of the art is amazing, the quality of the tech is amazing, if it actualy turns out to be fun.. then win win win
Personally, I don't care what it's called. "Next-gen", "Caroony", whatever. As long as it's fun. And if TFC was any indication, it most likely will be.
FYI Portal was in development before prey started showing off all their crazy portaling poop (I know one of the guys on the original team that valve hired to adapt their student game into what we now know as Portal)
all this stealing of ideas talk is rubbish... including a proven, good idea in something isnt stealing. By that logic, every RTS game out there is stealing their game design from whatever you consider to be the first RTS. Oh and all FPS games stole the concept of a no-ammo "base weapon" (fists, chainsaw, crowbar, etc).
There's a difference between stealing an idea and incorperating a good idea for the advancement of a genre. (will I succeed in derailing this thread? I can only hope)

IMO, such a new approach to MOFPS (did I just make that up?) is much more worth crapping my pants than just a gazillion polies.

They both look cool, it will be interesting to try all 3 once they are all released and see which one you like best.
There. Now the sand has been removed from your collective vaginas, and we can all move on in harmony.
