The Entry Materials will not be returned to any entrant. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, you acknowledge that Sponsor shall have the right to use, modify, reproduce, publish, perform, display, distribute, make derivative works of and otherwise commercially and noncommercially exploit the Entry Materials in perpetuity and throughout the universe, in any manner or medium now existing or hereafter developed, without separate compensation to you or any other person or entity and you waive all moral rights in such work.
Original Work of Authorship. You hereby warrant and represent that (a) you own all rights to all Entry Materials submitted by you
they can use it, but at least you retain ownership and they cant sue you for using it elsewhere, even commercially (assuming the character isn't one of blizzard's original designs)
I'll be entering this of course... and yes I think we should either have this be the next pc contest, or at least create another temp forum for this to run concurrently with the regular pc contests.
Ferg: I read that as "You asssure us that you have all the rights to the artwork submitted so you can transfer them to us". The preceeding rule says that you license them to do ANYTHING they like with your work. While you still retain the copyright and the ability to hand out licenses to others as well you cannot stop Blizzard from doing anything. Bliz owns the copyight to all derivatives.
EDIT: I especially like the "in the entire universe" bit. That's so going to help with extraterrestrial diplomacy...
the important part is they can't stop you from using it where you want. Besides, they're putting up "big" money for this, AND all the entries will draw from universes they've created, so I'd be very surprised if they didn't include a clause like that.
I started my entry this past weekend. I'll start a WIP thread soon.
I think they are using this as a talent search. I noticed a banner over at CGtalk saying that they have 30 spots in Art and Design and 20 in Programming.
I've been wanting to do some fan art for a while now.
How are you starting? I would like to start too, but I don't want to start something, and have the rules change or something. I'm assuming they want original designs in the style of a said universe?
strange choice of eligible countries, indeed. does that may have anything to do with work visa stuff - in the case the comment about recruitment holds some truth?
Bobo what type of specs are you talking? I wish I had a better idea on what ballpark they were looking for (again, I'm hoping some of these issues are clarified on the 31st). As in - I'd like to make some Diablo style environments or structures, or maybe starcraft base structures, but I dont know whether either of these brands are heading in a 1st-person direction, and that would certainly effect resources used etc etc. all I'm sayin'.
noritsune, I think you're really overthinking this. They're not looking for game assets and this isn't really an art test. Its a "make shit from our games" contest. Final submission picture is all that matters. If you make structures, you'd better make a damn nice scene for them to sit in. As I understand it you can do hi-poly or low-poly, as there is a category labeled 'cinematic.' I can understand wanting to conform to their current specs, but ballparking it yourself is as exact as you need to be, I'd imagine.
sectaurs I agree I'm probably overthinking the boundaries, especially given the range of crap they're bound to receive. however, I do realize that it isn't an "art test" or cattle call for assets.
this is interesting: "Winners shall be chosen ... based upon which entrants display the most (i) original, (ii) authentic and (iii) funny artistic expression"

I'm seeing a month and a half. slightly more than 2 months if you start early. Which calendar are you guys using?
I was kinda thinkin doin a envrionment for this.. wow goes next-gen or something.. Bu tim not really involved with the backstory and such.. any good resources to check out?
Whargoul, what sort of stuff? environment, character? and which universe? diablo, starcraft or warcraft?
Motives... www.worldofwarcraft.com is pretty extensive. Or you could do an image search for warcraft III buildings to get a look at the architecture and such.
Since I am in between jobs right now I might as well. Should make a nice portfolio piece, and I'm not exactly feeling rushed seeing how the deadline is in september.
hmmmm....ima thinkin of putting my current project on ice and jumping on this bandwagon. Maybe we should start a little PC support thread? Or is that what this is already

Hey - right when I have my sabbatical from work (too bad I won't be home the entire time - I'll be away on a road trip).
I would love to do something for this. Anyone wanna concept some stuff for me?
[/ QUOTE ]
Whargoul, you will always have a standing invitation from me if you want some concepts

I'd take you up on that - but I'm not going to have any time for this particular contest, I've got the big "road trip" coming up. But perhaps we can work on something fun together anyways....
i would say it doesn't matter as long as it's within reason. for the lowpoly they suggest staying around 2000 polies for WoW style characters so i would suggest keeping the texture 512 or 1024.
if you're going normal mapped why not enter the Cinematic with no limits on polies?
Replies
I'd like it if they released some stricter guidelines and/or restrictions come the 31st too... to make the entries a bit more technically uniform.
