the russian copy of the space shuttle, buran, was able to fly alone, and also did its first and only flight on its own. While the buran looks pretty much like the space shuttle, as the russians "borrowed" the plans, the main difference was that it could fly unmanned, and that it doesnt have a main booster engine itself, ie. only relies on the booster rocket it is launched with, which happens to be the most powerful rocket ever... ah well it all went down after soviet union collapsed... but the the jet that could transport it on the back, similar to the 747, also happens to be the biggest transport plane and is now being reactivated, as the maker of the plane, Antonov, finally survives pretty well on the market.
