weird photoshop problem......HELP!!!

OK...this is really weird. i create a new file. set it to grayscale because i need to block out a composition of varying greys. however, whenever i paint everything is a tint of brown. i tried to take a screencap of my problem...however when i uploaded it to imageshack...everything was in greyscale. it's not my monitor because in painter i can paint w/greys. but in photoshop, all my greys are brown. any idea's? it's drivin me bananas. ha ha.

Check your color settings. You may have a color profile that is shifting all of your color tones in PS.
Set it to sRGB and you'll probably be alright.

it's set to sRGB...still the same problem. thanks tho....this is really frustrating.

Upgrate to 7.1?
Check if you are in RGB mode, and not in CMJN?

really weird man....i decided to switch it off sRGB and to "monitor RGB-dell 1905fp color profile". and now i can paint in greys in RGB mode. however when i switch mode to grayscale...everything is brown again....IN GRAYSCALE. arrrggghhh!!!!!!
