You have a poly limit you want to hit, you do what you gotta do. I think at game view for what you'd use a 700 tri model for these days (psp, ds, etc) you can completely get away with hands like this. Nice model and I know the texture will be for the win but I dont think it feels very Mario. It looks like a muscle man dressed as Mario. Hahaha I know I hate seeing comments like this for personal fun projects but I think there is just so much you can do with a well known character without loosing its core. Chubby him up!

I think it would be quite cool to do a post on reminaginations of old game characters. There have been a few, but they all tend to be nintendo based, which is cool (as indeed your model) but i reckon we can push the envelope a bit.

gok : polysave, and from almost all angles it isnt noticable it is planes . quite usefull technique if we want to have 4 fingers instead of mittens in extremely lowpoly models

Apparently in the land of 2d fingers lighting is not part of the equation. Try getting a rim light on a one sided quad. Give me a break, are you seriously suggesting that removing those 10 polygons makes your model render faster. I bet the 8bit alpha is more expensive to render than the vertices.
The way I did mine, I didn't use any alpha, I just used seperate strip per finger. And who said anything about lighting? or a game engine at all? This is most likely going to be displayed at full bright, with all lighting coming from the texture, and it's also definately for a fun personal project. I can't speak for others, but I know when I made mine, I wanted to see how creative I could get with having expressive posable fingers, and still keep my triangle count well below 1000. fingers having any sides at all quickly eats up triangles, many more than 10. It takes six extra triangles per finger segment just to make them four sides instead of a flat quad.
Maybe everyone should just wait to see what b1ll is going to do with the final model/texture as I'm sure it's going to come out looking nice. If you hate flat fingers, don't make flat fingers the next time you make a character model for fun. Stop crapping up this thread.

If it's 'for fun', and not a game, then why even bother worrying about those 10 triangle sin the first place. I get it, you want to see what you can do with a triangle count well below 1000. But will the triangles you're going to save on the fingers make a big enough difference elsewhere on the model to justify the loss in silhoutte on the hand? I can't see that being the case.
The mario model I like - but its more so the style of how it was modelled (save the finger planes) than the character design itself. The fingers, especially from a profile view, are hardly noticable - this is evident in poop's naruto pose picture.
