Hey guys, im new!

I would like to thank Ben Mathis for his help, im trying to become a game artist and his information realy helped me to become something better.

I made a human player model only it needs some improvement and i hoped you guys could help me with that.

this is it at the moment:

male-1.jpg
malewire-1.jpg
maleback-1.jpg
malebackwire-1.jpg

its still made out of 2 sides, a left and a right side, each side is 1201 faces.
His back is kind of messy, the shoulderblades need some work and specialy the area around his ass, the wire pretty weird there,

any C&C is welcome, i would like to improve it in any way.

thanks!

( i have dyslexia so my english isn't that great smirk.gif )

edit: sorry, this should be better smile.gif

You might want to repost the images with more of the character and less of the background.

It's hard to tell much rom those images. but the thumb position looks very harsh - have a look at the position of your own thumb when your hand is relaxed - it's almost 90 degrees to the rest of the hand.

his chest look's like a man's but his legs look like a boy's.
tone the chest down or beef up the limbs.

agreed, and in addition watch the tricep area - cant see a back view in your new update but the upper pic looks suspect. right now the back of his arm looks like a mirror of the front - check out some pics of extended muscley arms to see the difference.

    1) Adjust your render output to closer match the shape of the object you are rendering. Instead of rendering out at 800w x600h render at 340w x 600h. Or fill up the render with other views. That way I don't spend 30min downloading a mostly blank background =/ Who knows you might get more people to view the thread and comment if they don't close the thread. In this industry optimization is key and wasted space is just that.
    maleupdate01.jpg
The green in this image points out the wasted space. 3D game artists loath wasted space since it is something most of us strive to get rid of but never quite do.

    2) Looks like you are off to a good start but there are a few points you might need to address.
    - His proportions are cartoony. Mostly in the chest and shoulders, his torso seems a wee bit too long also. When I look at this guy I can't help but think Earthworm Jim. If that is your goal, then keep going.
    - The hands are too small even for a cartoony guy. Hands are as long as your face. Put the heal of our palm on your chin and feel where the tips of your fingers line up on your forehead. Now make sure your model can do that.
    - Take a straight on frontal shot of your character, then bring it into a paint program and lay a real skeleton over it. You'll find that his shoulders are really too wide.

did you seriously just critique the negative space in an image? *dies*

Thank you, Vig. Thank you, Polycount.

Waste space in an image, waste space on an unwrap job. It's best he learn to not waste space now, unless he is planning on doing movies or prerendered work.

About the space, I figued since it didn't sink in when Rick mentioned it, an image might speak louder. If he has trouble understanding why wasted space is so important then he is going to have trouble with MANY of the crazy concepts and pipelines that abound in the industry.

I think the head only looks small because the chest/shoulders is so massive.

You definitely should reduce the scale (at the very least width) of the chest/shoulders region, especially the pecs. he practically has silicone pecs now. I think the slimness that you have going through the limbs is a good style that you shouldn't be afraid to extend to the chest and shoulders region.

Is he going to be clothed? nude? or remain an androgynous mannequin?
