What a bunch of bull. All of those games have been released or will see a release/sequel soon on a current gen console. I don't think they've approached this objectively. What happened to all those SNES, Megadrive, TG16, X68k, NEOGEO, or GBA games? Where's (one of the newer) Castlevania(s)?
Honestly, other than the mario games, I can vouch for the rest being real eye candy. And ear candy as well (loco's demo music was great fun, lumines' music is pure awesome, metal slug just rocks, and GGX's stuff is great).
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but to call these the "Top 5 Most Gorgeous 2D Games" is just ridiculous. Out of which games? Console games? PC games? The PC has had some outstandingly good looking 2D adventure games. The whole thing just seems a bit silly. I wish sites wouldn't do this top 5 or top 10 BS.
Probably "Top 4 games we could find a sponsor for mentioning plus a token game so we don't appear outright bought". Really, what other reason is there to make such a list and begin it with two titles for a system that currently has trouble selling and is being pounded by a platform that mostly appeals to lovers of 2d games? Yes, sure, the PSP is selling in the US but apparently not to gamers considering the relatively low software sales.
This article went beyond your standard 2D bitmap look. Many great looking 2D games from our past don't really do anything different from each other. Basically take Metal Slug as your old school shout-out. I'm glad they didn't let VGA nostalgia blur their vision.
