So what? They faked some screenshots for a bullshit magazine preview, who cares?
The game isn't dead or "vaporware," just not done yet. If it doesn't get done ever, is it really that shocking of a concept that mod would not get finished?
Ya. These days I read "Total Conversion" as "dead before the first release". People want those things to be more and more complete at the first release but seem to forget that they need just as much work as a full game so they keep working until long after the game is declared "dead". Most just decide they won't continue with a "dead" game and switch engines or abandon the mod.
It's probably because people are no longer modding because they want to see a certain idea implemented, they do it merely to look better to potential employers. The ones who want to implement an idea instead of making a showcase end up with a much more limited pool of potential team members because those went with mods that look "professional" and are likely to attract more players (in effect that means "clone of a popular game/mod").
That is definitely questionable, that evidence he's got is pretty incriminating. There's been a few of the ND team posting their work here, maybe they can be asked (though I think they just stop in to pimp their work, then don't post). That'd be a real shame, the mod looks really well done art-wise, better than a great many pro games art direction!
ahaha i made some props for them and i must say that they are VERY professional ( back then thou , now i think the staff was tottally revamped ), and i saw ingame stuff from them that they didnt show, so yeah...
Because it looked really cool. Remember, we all got excited about it back before even HL2 had come out. That and it was supposed to have co-op (that feature got dropped)
If the mod is ever released, and it resembles those screens, it would be nice. I think it's better for mods to release content as they make significant additions. Give people something to enjoy instead of hype. Would be sad to see a mod get so much completed, but never see a release. Stalker still looks great. Interesting how next-gen appearances are everything to some of you.
p.s. b1ll and KDR only post to feel proud of themselves. typing keeps them from using their hands on each other.
I still want Stalker quite a bit actually, the game still looks DAMN good, sorry it's not Crysis .
It looks great because more FPS games need to be open ended like STALKER aims to be, I want more FPS games to incorporate those RPG elements in a open ended environment, something rare unfortunately. Something comparable to Oblivion only more of an FPS flavor.
Speaking of which, Bioshock is sounding damn good.
yeah i dont see how a mod team pulling all the same "stunts" as a regular game company might while in production for press reason is somehow scandalous.
Ha. Big freakin' deal. They may not be making cash, but it's marketing just like any other venue. Their 'profit' is in hype. After working on mod teams, I'd be very surprised if there isn't more 'bullshit' media released than actual stuff. I can definitely say I've worked for a team that bullshit for over a year about their progress, and nobody was the wiser.
Their art looks great, and I hope they release some time soon. As everyone has said so far; It's not such a surprise that a volunteer team would do the same thing as a 'legitimate' developer.
slum is absolutely right. we had the chance to get a 3page article and had a deadline. its that simple. i cranked out the whole streetlevel of the japanese map in 2 weeks to get it done. we didnt have time for a screenshot session so i posed some models and put them ingame. big deal? no.
ND is everything but vaporwave. you can see progress on the dev boards everyday and the playtests are already pretty nice.
Yeah, that's good to hear. The only part that made the whole article sound legitimate was artists leaving; now that I know that isn't true the whole thing is pretty much discredited.
hm...i believe that about the artists leaving theres some misunderstanding.( sa7an , correct me if i am wrong) , but i think that most of the artists that started to work for nuclear dawn arent there anymore, like retro shinobi , the concept artist, obfuscate, etc.
sure there were people leaving but everyone left for their own reasons. uki went to the army, retro tried to get a job at ubisoft, obfuscate left because of discrepancies in the team. there are always people leaving (remember, this is modding after all) but we have a core team that will stay until the game is done and there often are people who apply to help us out.
Not to get too caught up in the drama, but yes there is something to the claims of artists leaving. It's not only because of personal obligations, there is in fact severe problems with working within the mod. I was on the team for all of about 48 hours before leaving in frustration, even though I modeled 80% of a character within that time.
There are some very tallented artists on the team, both in the past and currently, but the leadership can stand to learn a lot about communication skills, working with artists, and letting the appointed art director do his job without trying to get involved in areas outside of his expertise. I know of several others who have left for similar reasons.
I say this not to demean the mod or the members in anyway, but, that's my .02 on the subject.

Or why did people care about Stalker, for that matter?

You're forgetting how long ago the first media came out. For the time, it looked pretty cool (imo).

Daz! Holy shit, Stalker, I've been waiting for that shit forever, they upgraded to real time lights and now their game looks like junk!
