Um....hate to piss on anyones fireworks, but this is a pretty lame stunt. Ya, I shouldn't think the PR department had much to do with this one!

Albeit I have only been in the industry for a smidge over a year, I still don't have a SINGLE complaint. Maybe it's just about where you work. For sure my dream job.
A year Matabus? Haha, yeah, give it time. You'll have yourself some complaints.
Still, you totally missed my point. I'm not saying anything about the industry at all whatsoever. I'm specifically suggesting that where that quote is coming from is a little suspicious, given recent overtime lawsuits and reputations of certain studios for pushing people to the edge.

Yeah, I am picking up what you are putting down. I really just want to believe that the article is unbiased. I am extremely callow and completely understand how our industry, as any can, get old. For now I would like to live in my happy fantasy Mythic world where creativity and freedom live together in harmony.
What I'm putting down? I'm not putting anything down. Again, you misunderstood my point. YES, I do believe that for many young males, the videogame industry would be a dream job, and YES, for many young males, the videogame industry *IS* a dream job.
I'm not putting down the videogame industry. I simply have a good understanding of how the PR machine for a big company like that works, and individuals on teams aren't allowed to be interviewed by the press or make public statements without it going through legal and PR. ALL Im saying is, given recent events and poor reputations, I find the origin, accuracy, but moreover, MOTIVE of the quote suspect.
So don't panic. You're perfectly safe in your happy fantasy Mythic world.
yeah shame on us for working at a place that does not require 90 hour weeks,
i've been in the game biz forabout..4 - 5 years, and having worked in almost every shitty job imaginable, i completely agree with this article, game dev is the bestest, ! the biggest bestest, but the same with any industry theres some turd companys that can ruin the image,, you happened to work at a turd company. and it has made you bitter
LOL, been in America for six years and still learning the language. I used to think until fairly recently that a babyshower was a little mini shower attachment for infants that goes in the tub.
Oh fuck right off Rhino. That ISNT the fucking point I was making and you damn well know it. Read my post again. Im not dissing the industry. And me, bitter? You're usually the most miserable fucker on these boards.
Ive noticed before that you jump on any remote chance to have a pop at me, and Ive never figured out quite what your beef is but seriously, fuck off.

Haha! WTF did you think a "bridal shower" was, Daz?
"There's not much of a downside, other than the fact that there is often not enough time to get everything you wanted to into the game..."
Maybe it's not an outright lie. If you read between the lines it might read something like this:
"There's not much of a downside, other than the fact that there is often not enough time to get everything you wanted to into the game...on the design side it's pretty nice being able to do "market research" for half the day (heh, heh) while the art and code monkeys get horsewhipped to make the milestones. They get PTO after all! Not my fault that they can't use it. Oh and the high divorce rate, high blood pressure, etc."
Why is it we always hear the most about the absolute WORST companies and the absolute WORST working conditions and the absolute WORST divorce, blood pressure sob stories? I am sure there are PLENTY of awesome companies out there who treat their "art and code monkeys" with respect and fairness (not to mention great pay and benefits). I work at one. Who else does? Let's start focusing on the awesome.
Boy-howdy, do I agree! Though I think hair dresser would be up there too. Oh well.
Anyway, yea, I've been a mechanic, swept floors, judged magic the gathering tournaments, and I can say making games has been the best job bar-none. I've been at some poopoo companies before, so I can understand why someone might be wahwah about this, but lordy I've never been happier!
"What's wrong with golden showers? I like gold, and I love showers! I wish somebody would give me a golden shower."
Ok back on topic
Video-game designer is a pretty cool job, but the others they listed???
I mean seriously? Those, with maybe the excerption of the comic book guru, sould pretty lame.
Even if you don't think of the obvious (already mentioned) jobs like pornstar, where are the exciting (maybe a little dangerous) jobs like -dunno- fighterjet pilot or something like that?
I mean come on, this is supposed to be a MAN's dream-job!
heh here in texas 25k is pretty close to starting pay, my first offer at TIMEGATE STUDIOS IN HOUSTON TEXAS was 19k which i promptly refused and it was a good thing because after the game shipped they fired off the whole team and bought the unreal engine 3.0
Metabus: you'd be surprized how very few companies are actually awesome, its still not a bad job, i think in general game designer and game artists aren't quite on the same level though, game designer being more of a senior type position. Never heard of anyone starting out as a game designer. So I think the general experience of working as a game designer is a little different. But I don't think the people that wrote the article had that kind of understanding of the game industry, to a common person all of us here are game designers, i've stopped arguing that i don't actually design the game itself, i just make characters for it and random junk here and there. Its surprizingly difficult to comprehend for some people. I think this article is really based on 2 things, that westwood college commercial on tv and EA PR (must hire more peons now!!!)
I also think DaZ's lack of enthusiasm about the issue was not because all game companies everywhere suck ass, but because of the certain ignorant flair of the article.
I'm curious about what the forums based on the other jobs listed on that list are saying right now. Probably something along the lines of "We were robbed! Toy Creator is most definately the best job!" or "Brew Master! Yearh right! This job sucks! It's a hundred freaking degrees in here!"
VERY specifically I was pointing out the irony and suspiciousness of a studio renowned for being a sweatshop and the target of a class action lawsuit, now effectively putting out statements along the lines of 'it rocks to work here.'
But of course, oh no, people dont fucking pay attention anymore, and they instead much preferred to jump down my throat and accuse me of being bitter and twisted and dissing the entire industry and their precious little perfect jobs. Excuse my ass for not looking at the world through rose tinted spectacles.
Ive had some fucking shit jobs too including supermarket cashier. I happen to love what i do for a living, and think that its a great job. Never in this thread did I say otherwise.
but if it didnt have its "ignorant flair" where would we get our peons? hmmm
the school me and xenobond went to 95% kids thought game designer was a job title you could get walking in to a company and only took the ability to talk smak about games and play them, and so did all the teachers...

I'm gonna have to have an 'is Daz bitter? pole at this rate. People who know me know that I'm not at all. I aint got nothing to be bitter about apart from paying fuck loads of tax to this country for 7 years and still having practically no rights as a dirty immigrant. Well, I certainly wasn't bitter before this thread, but I think I am now.
i'm in the same boat with the tax thing, its pretty funny how there are a whole bunch of people who never even bother to learn english who have greencards. Common sense and fairness is just not in the equation. We all have to suck it down and love big brother.
alright, alright. Daz is one of the most helpful chaps around here so i would humbly request people stop trying to press his buttons. i know most people try and make a sport of exposing nerves and stepping on them online, but how about we wrap up this episode hmm?
This industry is so poorly managed; it makes me so angry. Seriously...if i'm not working for this company I'll be working for my own. No other place is worth my time. Not from what I have seen or heard.
The problem is: once you work in this business long enough you dont want to work on crap titles. All the buig titles have so many politics and idiots running them that the vets get pissed, and disenchanted with the business.
If the suits are too close thuings get fucked up...this is why publsiher-owned studios are a bitch to work for. The suits are too close...too in your face.
The idea situation is to be owned by a 1st or 2nd party developer and have the suits off-site.
Any other iteration of this recipe is a disaster. Either you get small business owners tryna compete with professional asshole suits...or the real deal suits who 'defuine' the word asshole. Like they ahve at Ubisoft montreal.
Oh yes. At the end of several 100 hour weeks, i can't sleep for thinking "oh, if only we had a few more hours to put that extra feature in". But once i get over that, everything's just fuckin' peachy
ok guys this is it : when i win the lottery and become a fucking rich jerk ill buy my own country for the porpuse of getting a game studio without burocratic crap...and i might hire 10000 of you.
Damn. We have it better than a lot of people realize it seems. Next time you are taking a piss, stop and think about the person who has to clean it up. It will make you feel better.
That is one way to look at it, however I feel that I am creating jobs by taking the time to piss all over the seat and the floor. If we all have perfect aim, they won't need to pay anyone to clean it up, right?
