I'm an old fashioned person. I like my diffuse, but I still want to try all this out.
I've tried making a spec map, a bump and a normal map. None worked.
I use all default max 7 options. except for the viewport and the textporter script.

My spec map was looking like other peoples spec maps. I wanted to achive a look like shimmers old contest entrys sheild:

which is just a diffuse with a b&w spec map. I applied it but no good. I put an defualt omni light but still no good.

Next I tried normal maps. I made some crazy and techy round low poly plane with a teched up highpoly. I used mops cgchat tutorial and it kind of worked. It made the map acceptably but it was as falt as diffuse with normal map colors. Again the omni light did nothing.

Recently I tried bump maps. Apperantly you don't need to modify channels to paint a bump map. Just black and white.
I tired it an good. I compared it with exactly the same texture but on a diffuse map and no difference. The lights made no difference either.

What am I missing here?
