Video format problem

I recently rendered an avi format animation in Maya. But after I render, I can't play it correctly with windows media player or edit it with adobe proemiere pro. When it plays back, I always see dead pixel, black area that doesn't animate and other very odd problems. From the looks of it, it seems the codec is not right. However, I can play the avi clip just fine with Divx player. I am trying to put this in my demo reel. Know most of the studios would want DVD, and DVD encoding is MPEG2. So I am really stuck on how to get this to work. Anyone can please give me some tip on how to do this thing right? Thank you

maybe you can open and re-encode it with virtual dub?

Or re-render, but this time render as a sequence of lossless images, like TIFF or TGA. Then after the render is done, compile into an AVI. That way if the render fails in the eleventh hour, or it does a crappy compression job, you won't lose the whole rende. You can also try different compressions this way.

What Eric said. Really, you should never render direct to AVI.
