I would say it depends on how detailed he wants it and what it's worth to you. Maybe check locally on what other graphic companies might charge. Personally, I usually design something as part of a website, so I don't have an individual price
Depends on your experience (the quality you can put out), and what they want to pay. I just got paid $500 for a logo, however I've heard prices ranging between $50 and $60,000. ($50 would be for amature logos that are not done in vector and the such, 60k for huge corporations and stuff).
i would say 75 for a single b/w logo design.
100 for color or 2 b/w variations.
and since you know the guy dont let him walk all over you with 'can you make this slightly more round, make this font a couple pixels taller', lots of little nitpicks that eat up time and you arent really getting your money's worth from.
sit down with him and have a nice conversation about what he expects from the logo. what kind of uses will he have for it? business cards, store front, etc..
Without a prior portfolio or experience I doubt he'd get 1200 for it hawken. Atleast in my experience. ANd I'm assuming there is no prior experience as he has to ask.
However 100 and 75 are deffinatly too low.
Also, colours used shouldn't really matter snemmy. Atleast in my experience. Black and white or colour is purely stylistic. (All colour logos need to work in black and while as well.)
Also, logos shouldn't be measured in pixels snemmy. They should be done in vectors, measured in inches if measuring is needed, and presented in an AI file format.
I'd say 100 bucks should be good, especially if he is a friend at work, he most likely won't have the cash for a much over that anyhow since it's not his main business, I'd just ask with whatever you feel comfortable with.. He is probably just looking for something functional that doesn't look like he created it in MSPaint.
