Regardless of how the game is, or what designs they've chosen, Final Fantasy games have always been one of the BEST demonstrations of art style execution by any developer.
Why do people feel the need to chim in about how they don't like FF games ? I hate sports games .I think they all suck but I would'nt go into a thread about how the newest Madden looks awesome and tell everyone the games have all sucked . I just don't get that ?
BTW watched the video trailer for this at gametrailers.com and the real-time graphics have pretty much caught up to the cut scenes
Seems to be some confusion here, which is not surprising because there are three different FFXIII games.
Final Fantasy XIII is the one with the girl in those screens above. She goes nuts with a gun-sword on a bunch of enemies on a train. The trailer actually showed a lot of realtime footage, but there are some pre-rendered scenes. The outside shots of the train are confirmed to be pre-rendered already. I suspect the ending sequence, and the first fight scene on the train as well. Everyone is pretty freaking confused about how this game will actually play.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII is a seperate game. That's the one with the dark, brooding guy and his floating swords in the screens above. I haven't seen the trailer yet or actually heard about how much pre-rendering was done for it. The visuals are being done by the Advent Children team, so for it to look totally freaking awesome is not too far-fetched. The gameplay is supposedly being done by the Kingdom Hearts 2 team, so expect combat along those lines.
There's also Final Fantasy Agito XIII, which is a mobile game I know very little about aside from the name. Supposedly you can use GPS to hook up and play with people physically near you.
Also, don't get your hopes up about an FFVII remake, as the team who did the FFVII PS3 demo is the one doing FXIII. They're going to be busy for a while.

I just watched the trailer. The thing is, it's kinda hard to make that statement when the use of pre-rendered graphics has been as rife as it has been in the current run up to E3 (not to mention last years). Really, as far as Im concerned, in specific regard to PS3 it's currently *exceptionally* difficult to know what's actually realtime in game and what isn't these days, and the fact that developers are getting less honest about this by the second is really starting to irk me. Perhaps more will become clear at the show.
acc: So that's a girl this time? I thought that's a man. Well, "man" by Final Fantasy standards. The face closeup definitely looks like "male FF character" to me.
The floating weapons look like the Ruler Sword from Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance to me.
just noticed that in the "ingame" screens there's the mention of ATB, the infamous active time battle system. here's hope they'll improve that crap that very effectively ruined X-2 (the part that wasn't ruined by plot and that chapter-design and of course the soundtrack). go square, you can do it!
i think Square is heading for FinalFantasy overload. how many FF are they working on now? Before Crisis, Dirge of Cerberus, FF11 expansion, FF12, several revamps of older titles and the three FFXIII games.
If only. You actually had to dodge stuff in PSO. In MMOs you just run to the enemy and watch your character hit it repeatedly for a minute or so until its HP are depleted.
It looks nifty and it'll be interesting to see whether or not that stuff is at least slightly pre-rendered. The style of Final Fantasy is kind of getting old...maybe it's just me.
I wouldn't be surprised if S-E found a way to make a game's action sequences consist completely of prerendered sequences. On the other hand they've been using less prerendered videos the more powerful the system is.
But then again this game can't have been in development long enough for this to be actual game footage.
I'm starting to get a bit discouraged at the poppy female lead characters. I wish they would bring back a darker theme kin to FF2 FF3 US. Japanese girls in short skirts are fine every now and then, but it's not a party if you have one everyday.
This one most likely will be Space CHannel 5, The Bouncer, and FF-X2 merged into a super Jpop seizure fest! Whoot.
Careful, to S-E "dark" equals "emo main character". Ever since FF8 I don't want to EVER see an emo kid as a game main char again unless used in a humorous role (Emo Man! Secret technique: Bleed to death!). Personally I'd prefer more humour in games, there have been far too few funny games lately.

Did you expect them to be generated by means other than computer? ;-p
good to see that the character design is less retarted than that of XII. now, bring back the turn based combat and we have a deal, square.
