this happened with the last challenge too... everyone wants to do an enviromental challenge and it gets posted as a destructible enviromental object. not quite what people wanted. now it has gone from 'cute demon' to 'chibi demon'. again not quite what people were asking for.
just leave it as 'cute demon' and let people go from there.
so, is it CUTE or CHIBI? more like Hsien-Ko in cheapy's avatar or more like the pink gargoyle in his post?
personally i say leave it at CUTE since that can include chibi stuff but leaves it open for people who want to play but do not like the chibi/SD styles

cute, chibi, sd, all the same thing buster! you're splitting hairs on this one.
well The local U is out this weekend, and I imagine most others will be too. CG chat is between contests, so maybe start it on sunday the 7th and end it on the 21st to keep to the 2 week quickie format?
up to you people. the basic premise, despite the jargon, would be to make something like that little demon dude bobo made a while back, or child hellboy style, as I mentioned. Chibi and SD are fine examples of this genre, but words only really circulated in the anime community.
Chibi just means short in Japanese. Chibi-Chibi is slang for midget.
One other question remains; what polycount do you guys favour?
also, although annoying, should be go down the line of "posed" entries? It means making a quick and dirty rig for your entry, but good practice for those who want it.

how about just demons? you girls can work on the chibi variety, while others add another portfolio peice.

I'd have to agree, and I'm actually going to opt out of this one. I had been looking forward to completing a challenge, but I think that given where I am currently my time would be better put to use modeling things which I could put into a portfolio.
Oh well, will still be interesting to see what everyone else comes up with.
And Hawken... does that mean that what we think of as "chibi" anime in NA would not be considered "Chibi" in Japan? Cause all I've ever heard to it refered to was those anime's with crazy proportions.
I haven't seen many series that are constantly chibi, usually it's just a few scenes in a larger show when the characters go through extreme emotional states (in a comedic way) or for sprites in videogames.
And why couldn't you put a demon with funny/cute proportions into your portfolio?
Personally given a 2 week timeframe low or mid poly at most. Plus it favors the overall size of the model.
Also I think that the sentiment that this is not portfolio useable is highly short sighted. EVERYONE and their mother who has paid attention to gameing in the past 10 years will have put in one or 2 big bad evil deamons, or other deformed hell spawn. We have 3 dooms and 4 quakes. Big mean deamons are run of the mill. Now take a fearsome evil creature and cuteify them, and thats something that could stand out in a portfolio. Seriously, which of these is more likely to pop up when you say "Devil"

well this is called a "challenge" and not "portfolio packer".
I guess it's down to those who will have a stab at anything and those who sit all of the challenges out. The former is far more likely to pack a portfolio full of varied work.
I once illustrated a clown on some other site, just because it was the theme of the month, not that I ever wanted to draw one in my wildest dreams but it turned out to be good fun.
Sorry, I hadn't meant that a cutesy demon was completely unusable in a portfolio, however for an environmental modeler I'm thinking it shouldn't be top priority. Also, while this might not be right, I have been told that I should be trying to keep my portfolio to a somewhat coherent style. I've also heard that anime/cartoony stuff is typically best to keep out of a portfolio. I was just working off that information. (Mostly garnered from either these forums or teachers at my school).
And the only reason I posted to say anything was because I figured that given that a lot of people showed interest in the last contest but no one actually went in, it'd be best if I stated that I would probably not be in this one so that I wouldn't contribute to a repeat of that. It wasn't supposed to be an attack on cutesy or chibi or the contest, sorry if it came across as such.
And I know the contests aren't supposed to be portfolio packers hawken, but considering that I'm in school with little extra time any extra time I put towards modeling I typically try to make count as much as possible.
Anyways, you did have some good points, when the contest starts I'm going to see if I have time for it still. Esspecially considering that last demon you posted. The way I've heard chibi talked about it's nothing like that.
I'm all up for creating a demon...maybe even a cute one. But I will not call it Chibi. I'll give this challenge a shot. Maybe find somewhere in between.
I realize this isn't intended to be a portfolio filler. But it's often a decision between working on a portfolio piece, or a silly contest...when both would be great. Time well spent, and fun.

I'll do it whenever. The sooner the better probably.
just leave it as 'cute demon' and let people go from there.
hopefully that will inspire some and give more of an idea.

And chibi is cutesy. And annoying. :P

Enviromental? Is that like a mad gardener?
I'm with EGX, why Chibi?

1. high poly (3000 tris, d/t/s/n map @ 1024)
2. mid poly (1024 tris, d/t/s/n map @ 512 x 2)
3. low poly (512 tris, d/t map @ 256)

along with the more traditional gritty looking demons one might find in buffy or hellboy
