I've seen an even funnier one where they had decorated the two robots as a Gundam and as Mazinger Z (Tranzor Z in the States). What was cooler was that they had rigged the arms of "Tranzor Z" to respond to a linear frame on the arms of one of the kids controlling the bot.

robot wars dosent even have robots, its just remote control cars with some metal bolted on the side. sometimes its had a hydrolic part. its the equivalent of watching 2 garbage trucks run into earch other while trying to pick up trash. i have no idea how this became a television show.

It appears to be Japan's answer to "Robot Wars", and the goofballs actually cosplay as the characters from the anime the 'bots are from.
...and the Gundam controller spent too much time putting sound clips into his control box, and not enough time learning to 'fight' with his bot. :P
