What other effects mesh well with the toon shaders? I wanted to try to create a scene that looked painted and I wondered what other things I could throw at it and not ruin that effect.
Also, I had an idea on how portals would be represented in the project. I Wanted it to look like a cross between clouds a tentacles and dry brush strokes (good luck me), where I got stuck is I wanted it to only show whats on the other side of the portal, another world, basically another scene being in place of the space the models taking up. How would I do this? Ill put up something if itll help.

I would think particles fall into area this too, you'd want to set some special behavior for them to get them to match the overall look.
We're experimenting with volume textures with special mips to make cool thematic shaders. Hatch works great so far. Here's a super-old screenshot, we're working on an upgrade these days.
There are some interesting algorithmic approaches out there in acadamia land.
