Reference mesh in Blender (un-selectable)?

I seem to remember reading that you could make a mesh unselectable in Blender, rather like a reference object in Maya. From memory, it involved moving the object to another 'scene', but I've had no luck as yet. What I'm trying to do is import a mesh to have as reference while I make another version of it - and I want it visible in the viewport, but unselectable. Any ideas?

EDIT: I got a reply on Elysiun - so I thought I'd post it here 'cuz it's a handy feature.

When you've created your two scenes, open the render buttons and in the 'output' panel there's a small button with up/down arrows (above the backbuf button). Click that and select the scene you want to reference.

Gravy.
