damn that is soooo cool! .. im thinking spore 2(look at me already looking way too far ahead) would be awesome as a sort of mmo, where players are allowed their own galaxy, and at a certain point the universe is "opened up" to allow conquering other galaxies, etc.. thatd be freakin awesome!
Mannn my heart filled with joy when I saw the thread title!!! But it was just that gameplay vid heh
I wonder how 'procedural' everything is, sofar the creature and buildings he made in the video look a lot like the ones from the screenshots that have been around for a while now...
Oh my, this game looks like it will be so much fun! Get to see Darwinism at it's best, haha. Because I'm sure they'll be plenty of creatures you create that pretty much suck at life, and you'll have to modify it to be the best.
If I heard him right it sounds like it's a single player game based around multiplayer content? So like I build a civilization that would be downloaded to your comp and then the computer takes over it as you play? That sounds so friggin cool. Awsome way to expand the environment.
though yeah, this would be a cool MMO, but I can see it already, you just start out, and have your organism eating little things, and some jerk just swoops down in his saucer and blows up your planet, just because they're bored.
this is quite possible the coolest thing i have ever seen. sadly he managed to combine every game i hate the most into one super ball of games arsh hates. i hate god games, sim games, sandbox games, RTS games, anything that revovles around isometric style view that is not marble madness i am guarenteed to hate. i am more of a get in there and game and get the fuck out kind of guy. i dont want to level up or get a new thingy for my thing, manage money, tell people what to do, build shit. thats all stuff you can do in real life, waste lots of time earing tokens for your time and cashing those time tokens in for trinkets to make you think all the work is worth it. i have to admit that is by far the most impressive feat of gaming i have ever seen, i just have a feeling this is one i am going to be watching my girlfriend play a lot, just like the sims, black and white, civ, age of empires, movies, anything i dont like she automatically loves.
arsh: i agree, i pretty much never play any of the games that Spore has rolled up into its mega game, but i think by the very nature that it treats each of those games in a much broader fashion than any of the games it's based on, i might be able to enjoy this one to a great degree. since it can't be a full fledged RTS or Civilization game because that stage is just one part of the overall process, i think that'll curb some of the less enjoyable complexities that naturally creep into those respective game types, as that's the whole game.
with Spore... damn. Will Wright is such an asshole, didn't anyone tell him you can't make a game this ambitious?
yeah, i dont know how theyd control that kind of thing.. but it would be alot of fun if the possibility were there for intergalactic war.. maybe theyd make it so you cant be attacked until you are at a certain technological level? i dont know.. but the game looks awesome

Hehehe I tried showing the demo to my girlfriend and she liked it but 10 minutes in she was like...If he says "um" one more time..and the Um's continued. Its funny how sometimes you don't notice something like that until someone points it out. The first time I watched it I was so excited about all the gameplay (I was a Sim-fiend as a kid..I had em all Sim Earth, Sim Life, Sim Ant, Sim City...probably responsible for my current life science and systems obsession. ) Anyway I didn't notice all the ums till Sara pointed them out...after that it was just rediculous
Man, after watching this last year I just about crapped my pants. I think this is the future of user created content -- having all the tools built in, as part of the game.

Maybe we should have a "design your own spore creature" modeling challenge.
EDIT: ah dammit that's not a demo! That's just a vid of the gameplay. They were talking about it in #MD.
Gah, i'll go cry myself to sleep now!
(btw, for those who want the whole presentation, slides and better quality video, visit GDCTV.)
Anyhow - that video is DAMN impressive and shows real coding genius although I think I'll get bored with it fairly quickly, personally.

Not only that but it sounds like a good solution to make the game as huge as it is without eating a ton more resources than it already probably does.
god I want to mess around in this game.
