I know this could use some more complexity, but the concept is taking me too long and I need to move on.
Plus, I'm going to lose my nerve if I dont post this now; this is my first try, and the other people's work here is just incredible.
I should mention the weapons are not entirely my own, I started with base photos, edited them and painted over top.
The concept is simple, invading troops are ransacking Earth museums due to the lack of weapons.

Besides, I see it this way, it's not like he's an American general, hes an invading marauder, so who says he has to wear the uniform as we would.
As for the bars, the coat I based my design on was Robert Lee's, and the photo showed no bars, stripes or medals of any kind, just stars on the collar.
About the concept: Looks cool, but I think it could be pushed more. Maybe instead of a musket, he can be huger and carry a canon, with a broadsword strapped on as a bayonette.
Execution. It looks like you are using the smudge tool a lot. Without a wacom it is hard to get any of this computer art to come off as quite right. There is a name for the technique I sometimes use, and it may work if you are painting with a mouse-- it is called (I think) "micro glazing" and it involves setting the opasity on the brush very low (10%) and building the shading up. A really good work-flow for using the mouse would be to sketch it out, scan it in, paint the interior of the character very dark (90% black), clean up the profile with pure white (or whatever you want the background color to be, grey is not bad), then start micro-glazing in the direct light frome above to pick out the shape you want.
Good luck, and glad to see you in here.
Just out of curiosity, is there some reason I should not be working with smudge? I realize it can end up blurry, but I normally go back and define the edges. I quit in the middle of this concept as it was becoming a project of its own.
As far as the concept ideas listed here:
Ninjas, I love the idea of a big dude holding a cannon; I am definitely going to give that a shot.
rooster, you are absolutely right, I need to show more of the legs coming through. I already felt like the legs were a little loud under the pale colored coat and since I wanted it to look old and battle damaged anyways, that makes perfect sense.
I am absolutely still working on this; I just hit a snag that has slowed me down.
A solid week of work was done using a copy of Max8 I had just been given by a friend, then after a system restore, my license stopped functioning and I cannot seem to repair it.
The only legal copy of Max I have is 6, and I obviously cannot open my file in that, so I am stuck either starting over again, or formatting my drive and reinstalling my borrowed copy of Max8. That would probably take just as much time as starting over, and either idea is just so overwhelming at this point that Im procrastinating doing anything.
Glad to hear you are still in it. Maybe you can get your friend to export your file into a different format, so you can load it up in 6. On the other hand, Sectaurs started again from scratch on his dude, I think, just because he is a masochist. But the new model looks even better!
