Nice explosion, but the rest isn't the same quality. The guy could need a little extra definition, such as a edge where his pants start and his shirt ends. If it isn't a shirt+pants combination I would get a couple of onepixel highlights in there to help the forms, mainly on the pants and face.
The ufo needs extra detail. Some more precise highlights on the glass would definatly help. A pulsing engine with more color bleeding could be a nice touch. A couple of bit of the alien pilot or just his ship would make your explosion more effective.
I think that the sky in the backdrop needs to go, it doesn't fit with your other sprites. A lensflare and couple of extra photoshop filters doesn't cut it. Get some sky reference and maybe hint at a couple of alien structure hulking at the horizion (for example, hl2 citadel has a nice siloette).
The guy kinda reminds me of the old Fade to Black game.
I think a big help would be lighting on the characters. You imply some lighting when he fires up, but otherwise the guy and the UFO have no lighting on them, a little soft lighting would do wonders.
Hmm, about the lightning I was trying to make it look like the light source comes from the back (the sun) but it looks a bit weird.
I have painted this in photoshop, does the lightning look good here then? http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/9046/gubbe6np.jpg
About the sky I tried to make it a little diffirent from the sprites so it will be easier to see the sprites.
Im going to check those sites out and see if I can learn something from it
sorta reminded me of some zoomed out view of quakeguy
back in the day there was a decent pixel forum called pixelation.cjb.net but it's since gone. These days I would advise going to http://www.pixeljoint.com or if you're in for a beating, eatpoo.

This looks shoddy, like something that was thrown together by a ten-year old in paint. If you are a ten-year old paint user, the crits still apply.
You really need to learn some fundemental aspects of pixel-art.
Making a good palette ramp is one thing; you have a humongous amount of shades too close to another, especially the skin-shades.
Another no-no of pixel art is pillow-shading. Which means shading without a defined lightsource, you have that too.
Here's a few resources that might be of help, read them through and then do what you have done again, and again, and again.

Or all those big guys in Out of this world, rather
The vibrant background is inconsistent with the sprites and is distracting.

I think it looks pretty good compared with the other ones but im not sure about the lightning on the wings....
I'd try reducing the amount of dither (at this scale it looks like a very rough surface) and work some hue-variation in to the ramps.
You're making progress!
