that is an excellent start, i'm glad you've made sure to keep him jowel-y and old. hold off on starting the mech for a little while if you would, please, i'm going to take a second pass at that mech in a perspective drawing and i think you'll really dig it.
That's the normal on the low poly then? What all materials are we looking at here?
Looks good, if not a bit more brute-ish than Hitler. I blame the ruggedness of the front view and heavy brow. I like it though, and would move on to the body unless you really want to capture his real look.
Very cool.
Not bad at all but I don't feel it's recognisable as him quite yet. Might help If the hair and tache were darker. Your brow seems very heavy, and I dont think Hitler was quite that fat. Can we see the model without quite so much perspective distortion?
@makkon: Not realistic enough, have to tweak the maps
@ cholden: I'm waiting for gauss
I'm using a Phong with color + normal + specular maps. Final version will have a cubmap (reflecting eyes) and a gloss map, maybe a fake sss map too..
@ Daz: nice reference pictures Have a look at hitler's last days, thats what inspired my model..
nevertheless your pictures will help me to tweak some areas.
i think it's a great job, i'm glad we're on the same page as far as how as hitler should look keep an eye on my thread, i just finished a 3d mockup model for the mech (which i will pass along to you) that i'm about to paint over.
excellent work. the stray hairs and drawn look of his face are really spot-on if you ask me. if you'd like to get an easy start on the mech, you can grab the mech mock-up model i did for the paintovers here:
Well, I just showed the picture to some people in my house, and they couldn't tell who he was supposed to be. You're missing the two things that usually make hitler, hitler. Pales white skin and black hair. Even if he really had brown hair, most pictures of him were in black and white, and has become whats associated with him.
Its an excellent head, but looks more like Hitler's decendant than the man.
i think nailing a close resemblance would matter more if he were doing a proper character model, but as it is the head will be encased in a large mech that was obviously the work of National Socialist engineers, and so is a somewhat more minor detail. for the application i think he's invested more than enough detail and likeness for it to come through fine.
Sectaurs: do people in your house know a lot of people who sport the Hitler moustache?
sectaurs: haha yeah, good points. since i'm working on the mech paintover i wanted to incorporate your head model at least partially, katz, so i couldn't help but examine the proportions myself. really the big obstacle to a stronger likeness is dropping the eyes down a bit and giving him more forehead; much as he would have liked to, Hitler did not have a very heroic, menschlich proportions
exemplis gratia:
edit: and katzeimsack, i finished the paint-up for the mech as well, check it out in my thread.
oh my, very nicely done coming together very well. you're welcome for the lowres model, that's just the way i work for nearly anything mechanical--i like it, because i can use it to finish up a concept without having to hassle with proportions or perspective, and the modelers i'm working with like it because they don't have to hassle with the proportions either. it's quite clear to me that you've been busy focusing on the good stuff
i was a little reticent about some of the changes you made in your paintover, but from the model it looks like you're incorporating them in a much more elegant manner, like the headlamp. really going to enjoy watching this one develop now!
i think the skintone needs more yellow, even some green in places. right now even the shadows are painted very reddish. nice work though.
can't say i like the overall theme very much - nazis for one and then: wasn't hitler supposed to be one bad military leader? not exactly a legendary general, worthy of being resurrected...
anyway, if i recall right, you're from germany or one of the neighbouring countries. i guess it's obvious that you better stay away from showing that piece in your portfolio if you're applying for a job somewhere over here.
hey, hitler was the pure evil! Therefore he HAS to join the evil polycount...
Your are right, Hitler was one of the worst generals ever!
But it would be booring to use Rommel or other great generals.
I 'm for Germany and you are not allowed to show Nazis symbols here. Games like wolfenstein replace them with normal symbols an so will I.
p.s I have a job so there is no reason for a portofolio..
btw: I wouldn't glorify hitler in any way! He will be damaged, dirty, old, nearly dead!
I head a really hard time to bake the normals Did it many times before, but this guy has so many seperate parts that I had to cut him into ~5 parts and bake the normals two times for every part
well i think your hard work has paid off! dying to see a higher res pic of that render. you did a great job elaborating on the detail on the arms and torso particularly.
Pretty darn good model you have there. I like how you captured the feeling of weight by making him look like a very heavy mech. Half tank, half mobil unit, sweet:)
I am not sure how close you are to being finished, but, here are a few things that could be interesting:
- Dirty him up! Right now, he is too clean. It would be cool to have his feet very muddy looking and then have it extend up a little onto his legs.
- Maybe loose the grass on the stand. The grass makes the scene look like a casual walk through the prairies. How about if you exchange the grass for either cement or sand? It could be cool if you had a desert sand scene for this and maybe have some sandy mist clouds floating about.
- Labels. How about adding some labels. Every mech unit has them. Warning signs, *cough* naked women stickers, nuclear signs etc...
Otherwise, Everything else is coming together rather nicely. Keep it pumping my fellow rival enemy!
I'd like to see the color scheme taken further, and brown rust/dust in the recessed shapes of the metal. I imagine this guy waltzing out on some industrial hangar, maybe that direction with the base would suite this better.
Its a shame you've got the textures mirrored on his legs, they're such a prominant piece, and the graphiti, which looks sweet on one side, really makes it obvious that its mirrored.
I think the head-light beam is a bit overwhelming in that render, and the lights you added in ps [i'm guessing] aren't lighting the actual model, which is hurting an otherwise superb piece.
Glad you took the time to finish! Good for you. I suggest putting together a 400w x 800h final pose image so you can truly finish. For that, I agree with Sectaurs about the overwhelming light, and a background would be great too.
Thx!
Everything is straight out of maya (even the light)! That's why it's so bright. It's really hard to controll the polygon light
Only thing added in photoshop is the glow effect.
It's my first render with maya and there are many parts which I would like to fix, but aren't able to
Have to learn much about rendering
about the mirrored textures and the winningpose:
This mdoel is actually too big for this comb. I were not able to add the details I wanted to. A 2048 texture would have been much better. Also the model has a size that makes it really hard to make a good winning pose ...

Doesn't have much time, this has to be enough for the normalmap...
still wip...
wow
Damn, that's tight! Very realistic texture, and the model rocks! Well done, good chap.

thanks for the comments too
I think i will spend up to 30 tris for his hair, it just looks too flat at the moment...
no sss, only some tweaks, don't want to waste too much time on the head..

you're still going to need my paintovers to flesh out the details, but that mockup should give you more than enough for an easy start on the model
Its an excellent head, but looks more like Hitler's decendant than the man.
Still a superb face though.
Sectaurs: do people in your house know a lot of people who sport the Hitler moustache?
I think the problem is that in that shot the mustache is hard to distinguish from the shadow. Front-on would probably sell it more.
I suppose having just his little head exposed to sunlight *would* give him an awful tan by the year 3000...

here is my updated version of gauss great concept :
the for the great lowres model gauss

I would make the swastica indented instead of extruding like it is, though, especially if its going to glow.
bolt cutters strapped to the top is a nice detail.

anyhow.. the look is nice
still much to do
only rough color and no spec map...
e: 4900 tris

It's my first render in maya, so please don't be too hard.
