I am playing around with Maya (used to only Max) and I can't figure out how you can manually weigh a vertex to 1 or more bones and input a weight percentage/value per bone. I can only find a weight painting option
Asthanes got it. Open the component editor, select the verts that you want to edit, and click the "Load Components" button in the Component Editor window.
if you stick with the paint weights method you can do it too. Select your verts, enter paint weights, select the bone. Then flood with 1.0 on the little slider. It seemed faster to me than using the component editor.
