Might see if I can get something made before I go back to uni. Here is my first concept. I see a lot of awesome work on these boards, some really out there stuff. I decided I wanted to see if I could make my General a bit of a nod to some classic fellows of pre-1900's, Hence his haircut and some parts of his suit. Here's my first concept.

I know its a bit rough and he isn't looking very futuristic yet, but thats the basic gist of my design so far. Didn't want too much over-the-top stuff, as I can see this guy sitting on a hill far away from battle, sipping some tea and planning from afar, rather than leading his troops directly. I do however think he needs to look a bit more evil since we are the "bad guys", and I will try and incorporate some more futuristic stuff too. I don't intend to give him a ranged weapon, possibly a pistol just incase, but I can't see him being in a position to use it.

Design critque appreciated.

looks like a strong start. i think the issue here is that the armor is still edging a little too closely to the WH40k stuff which is such a big reference point for this contest... the devil is in the details and the details are best shamelessly copied from reality smile.gif i highly recommend getting more detailed reference, particularly for that suitcoat. if you up the ante on the refinement, not only would it suggest the bearing and class of this great general, but it'll give the viewer a lot more to explore when looking at the character.

at this point, the torso (prime real estate for interesting bits) makes it look like you don't have reference available, because there's just no detail. really look into some napoleonic era uniform and garb and you'll find no end of really interesting coats and jackets and stuff, the sky's the limit. the hood/collar thing also seems pretty stock sci-fi, finding a more novel approach to that by thinking through why it's there (why do so many characters have those, anyhow?) would really help strengthen the design. the shoulder cape is good though, and overall you've done a good job of presenting a unified character and a definite look and feel. what it's going to come down to is refining and iterating the details such that you no longer have a collection of stock costume details but a really coherent, interesting design. reference and successive revisions will help this process. i like where you're going with this character and i'm looking forward to seeing you bring him to life.

Just a few minutes ago i was writting on my own thread some links to images of those kind of coats. Take a look at the second page here : http://boards.polycount.net/showflat.php...e=0&fpart=2
    I hope that helps.

    Keep it up!
