Polycount - Generals - [Vig]

I'll shed some blood for the big green. CGSHAT BLOOD! BWHAHAHA! I have put everything on hold while I work on this and I WILL NOT puss out on this challange =P

Concept:

WIP_01

I've made some changes to the concept. Given her a petty coat type coat under her outter most coat. I also got rid of the super hero spandex. This will be more noticeable once posed in the winning stance. I might rework her color scheme to match a more unified look to match the Polycount Army. I also might switch the symbol on the hat to the Polycount Army logo =)

All in all I am happy with the work I have done so far. Still MUCH more work to be done... No rest for the wicked!

I like the color scheme you have now... and the polycount logo would look nice in burnished gold on her hat. What sort of weapon is she going to have?

I preferred the cuffs in the concept... right now they sort of look like wheel centers. And her coat-tentacles seem awfully thick, though I'm going soley off the concept.

    Corsets FTW!

To get in the proper spirit of the war, I switched my avatar back to sluggo. But that wasn't enough. So today, I punched it up =D

I am re-working the outer coat and "cuffs" to better match the concept. I am also adding in 2 small robot minions to carry her gear and weapons. I don't have any more WIP pics yet, but I wanted to post my ideas to get feedback and stake my claim on my idea. Since I shot off my big mouth and told some people about my idea already =/

    1) One short fat robot about knee high. This one has a back-pac with some of her gear and a communications set up, kind of like a WW2, vietnam war radio operator. It also is equiped to be a cooking-bot so built into it is a stove or mini-kitchen.

    2) A long skinny robot that acts as a stand up stablizer for her sniper rifle. It will have one hand on a gear that helps position the the rifle and another hand holding binoculars up to its eye(s).

I have some rough concepts sketched out on post-it's notes but nothing I can (or care to) share. The robots are made out of brass and a little dinged up. I am not sure if they will be steam powered or not, but they will be steam-punk-ish.

Dude, that sounds awesome. Really matches the personality you've got in the concepts... I picture her strutting around in her nice fine gear, ways back from the front-line, having her helper scan the distance through the binocs and keep her updated, occasionaly sniping a high-priority target.

Maybe make the short fat one double as a camp-stool for her to sit on.
  • Mark Dygert
You and I imagine the same pose. I plan to use that pose as my final. I like the camp stool idea. But I think I will go with a regular wooden stool and a small kettle hanging over a small camp fire. The cook bot could be clutching her leg (kind of scared) with one hand and have a pan in the other like it was just cooking. It might add to the "behind the lines" look? Like she was having a meal and stood up to take a shot or something big happened in the battle.

The character the bots and what are attached to the bots will fall under the polycount. The rest will be the base.

I managed to sqeeze out some more progress. I still have quite a bit to clean up, push around and detail but for the most part she is done. She stands at 3567 tris and a ton of that is in the face which can be trimmed out. This is the third female face I have done that has more than 200 tris to it, so if you see something shout (I iz still learnin')

I've budgeted 500 tris per bot so that doesn't leave me much room for her rifle. We'll see just how many tris the bots actually take up, they are pretty basic in design -)

Oh man, that's awsome, dude! I absolutly love the coat and shoulderpads, what a combonation. The hat is also gorgeous, and it adds real character to your model. I can't wait to see her textured. laugh.gif

    WIP_04
The bots and her weapon are blocked out, still not really any where close to being finalized. I have 50 polys to spare so I have some trimmin' to do. The cook bot idea would take up too many polys so I changed him to a little drummer/communications bot. I might add some pots and pans to him later, but that depends on how much I can chop.

that head dress reminds me of barlowe's decurion, pretty neat smile.gif I'd optimize the face more, theres alot of polys there that aren't really doing anything, you're better off spending those polys on the top of the head dress thingy to make it rounder, or something similar like that. also a minor thing, the head seems a tad too small in proportion to the rest of the body. but I can kinda see that with the oversized stuff.
  • Mark Dygert
hahaha, a toilet! He does look like a toilet doesn't he. Maybe I will revisit the cook-bot idea again after trimming a few billion polys off her face. She is 11 heads high so I think you are right her head is a touch small, but she has some really long legs and is wearing heals, so I have to account for that. Why didn't I do an alien then I could get away with funky proportions, hehe.

    Back story time
The history of Dasha Theodosia as chronicled by Prof. Vig from O.M.A. at Zeonchka.
Department Head Supervisor of Historical documents.

DASHA THEODOSIA was accepted to the O.M.A. (Officers Military Academy) at the age of 22. Normally applicants where not accepted until after they have finished their full mandatory 5 years of service. Since M.M.S. (Mandatory Military Service) began at the age of 20 most officers where well into their 30's before they where allowed to take command. Such rules have changed for obvious reasons.

During her training at the academy she displayed great tactical prowls. Choosing to stay out of direct combat Dasha found that she could often guide her troops to victory through the chaos of battle with her ability to hit key targets in battle from great range. She was often able to destabilize and confuse the enemies chain of command, if not eradicate it all together. At the age of 26 she bested the brightest minds the academy had to offer in their annual war games. All of the would-be generals where much older and had many more years of scholarly training than she did. The outrage from the upper classmen was great and the headmaster decided her victory was a fluke. When the time came for next years competition he sent out the letters to all of O.M.A.'s alumni to come and try their hand at beating the upstart. The first and last time Alumni where allowed to participate.

First the generals squared off against Dasha one at a time in series of 24hr small battle competitions. After destroying each of the generals before the allotted time was up, they combined forces and challenged Dasha in a week long war game. 3 Days into the competition Dasha had managed to make such a mess of their chain of command the generals had taken refuge in a bunker and lost the ability to successfully command their troops. They refused to concede to Dasha's forces and so they stalled with defensive tactics.

Luckily for them war broke out and they where called to the front lines once again. The same tactics they where forced to use against Dasha are the same tactics that saved our forces and the capitol city of Zeonchka. Our war effort was caught off guard, we where only able to mount suitable defenses and stop at the gates of our walled capitol city. Loosing many troops in the constant effort to mount an effective counter attack the generals where at a loss and something needed to be done before attrition took its toll. It was decided that a diversion was needed if they where to break out of the southern gate. Not wanting to lose any of the few generals they had left, Dasha was called to lead the diversionary forces out of the west gate and away from the city toward Ranevskaya the largest neighboring port city if successful he was to take and hold the city.

Dasha's forces left the west gate an hour before dawn. Plasma charges where detonated at every gate except the south, once they where at a safe distance. The fighting was intense but not the slaughter they had expected. The south gate was where the main push was to be centered and the enemy knew it. The remaining gates where to be sealed to prevent flanking maneuvers from the enemy. We later came to find out the enemy had no such plans and gathered the majority of their forces at the southern gate. The entire south wall was rigged with shaped charges aimed at turning the wall itself into shrapnel aimed at the enemy forces outside. Leveling the wall would also widen the assault front and give us the greatest chance of victory. Not much is recorded after the charges on the southern wall where detonated. The records where lost because the only communications officer to survive was in Dasha's 3rd battalion. What little we do know was written down after Dasha's forces had managed to secure the city of Ranevskaya. His report reads as follows:

"The diversion failed to draw enough enemy troops away from the main counter attack, because of this we where able to take and hold Ranevskaya. We lost communication with HC (High Command) shortly after the south wall was lowered. According to intercepted enemy transmissions they are gathering their forces to attack our position. Thick black and purple smoke is all we can see of our capitol. It lies sacked, in ruin and on fire. They must be burning the bodies of our slain compatriots and civilians; it is the only thing that explains the purple smoke. Surely this is will be the fate of Ranevskaya and ourselves."
Incidentally he was later tried and executed for the fatalistic last line in his report.

When news of the coming attack reached Dasha she had already begun to move her troops into position. She smiled and said “of course they are coming, they are the enemy.”

Dasha did not place her troops in defense of Ranevskaya but instead attacked Zeonchka, conquering the city and the invading army. She knew it was much easier to lay siege to a city than it was to defend it especially one that lacked its main defensive wall. Since all other gates had been sealed the enemy army had no place to maneuver out of the city except thru Dasha’s forces. Dasha sat on the same hill the opposing general had sat on earlier that morning. She surveyed her victory as the sun started to set over the ruined west gate. Fighting continued into the night but by morning the city and our future, where under her control.

Looking cool Vig. Very Napoleonic. As you said, she could stand to lose a few polys from her face, but it definitely looks the part.

Personally, I'd like to see the robot more clearly defined now. Go to it!

    I reworked the bots.
    - Toilet-bot has been replaced with cook-bot. Toilet-bot isn't gone, he is just over the hill out of sight digging a hole.
    - I shaved a bunch of polys all over the place. The grand total is 4398 so I have some to spare. Which will more than likely be put into her weapon(s)or the stand-bot.
    - I thought it might be a nice touch if he played the violin or had one hanging?

Next step posing unwrapping and texturing =)

After Atari shut down my department I didn't think I would have time to still be in this challange, what with having to update my site (done) and post resumes everywhere(done). Since this was shaping up to be one of my better pieces (as contest challanges go) I think I really need to finish this one off.

I finished upwrapping and started in on the textures. Since I have a ton of free time on my hands I should be able to wrap it up in time.

After going to see what the other side was up to, I realized my choice of colors might be considered traitorous... soOoo before I am shot in the back by one of you black hearted dogs, I changed it. I also shrunk her hat down a bit and did a few minor texture changes. Oh, and posted the flats as they stand right now 2x256.

I love the change in color! you should change the fringe on her shoulder-pads to silver to match the lace.

the way you have the coat edges set up, couldn't you have made it have a tiled set of buttons at a much higher resolution?

I like the green better than the red, and it matches the forum/team. Looking cool. I think some of the values need to be pushed like in the face. Right now all the definition is in the fact that its a 3d model. I think some of it could be pushed in the texture. So like a little darker on the sides of the face/neck and may be some light hitting the tip of the nose and front of forehead.
