now THAT's what i like to hear! been way too long since i've seen one of skanker's very fine creations, and we all know for a fact you've honed your skills well with those commercial projects of yours. time to show people how skanker does it these days!
I call him Cronus after the first character I ever truely designed back in highschool.
I haven't concepted in over a year, so I'm rusty. Either way, I don't like to have a final design when I model. That gives me freedom to change as I go. I always find that I work best that way.
I have the general idea. Might start modeling soon.
Segmentation baby! That will save me polies that I can use for transistors, pipes, exhaust, and gears. Lots of neat stuff.
Gotta flesh out the head more. So far, I would like to put lots of scopes and other things on there. not sure if I want to include any fleshy bits or just go with a straight construct.
One arm is regular, the other is a mega gun of course.
Also, not sure where to take the legs. The final render won't be kind to the spider legs, as they lack the verticality the render demands. So I'm thinking regular legs or something similar will have to do.
As far as everything goes, I plan on putting glow maps inside his ribcage, where ever there's transistors, and in the boiling pot device on his back.
Also, what about particle effects? If so, then I'm going to put steam jutting out of every nook and cranny.
Anyways, off to sleep. I might scratch up a couple more doodles before modeling.
So is it diffuse + spec + bump + whatever = 1x1024x1024 or diffuse = 1x1024x1024, spec = 1x1024x1024, etc? Your post sounds a bit like you wanted to say the latter (because you begin with "yes" as in "MauF is right") but the wording suggests the former.
Basically you do a 1024x1024 diffuse sheet, then you're allowed to do spec, bump, normal, opacity for that sheet... so you'll end up with 3-5 1024x1024 maps.
Working on the head currently.
The shoulder pad design is from a design that I made for Aeon Flux. Liked it so much decided to carry on the theme here, 'big gears!'.
Well, I guess I should post his story since that's what everyone else is doing.
Here's what I got so far: The 20 year war
In the near future, the world is slowly pushed into a new world war. Increased population and technology make it more difficult for people to stay out of each other's buisness when it comes to foreign affairs. The war is slow and goes on for many years with no real impact to society around it. Slowly, as the years go by, the fighting escalates, and with no clear end in sight, people rally and protest. This wages on for 20 years.
The biological weapons
The end of the war ended with many big bangs. The first of many biological weapons was detonated and carried via air currents. This virus kills off almost half of the world's population. Simultaneously, another biological weapon is detonated, this one is a virus that eats silcon and other synthetic materials. Airborn, this destroys everything that man-kind has achieved technology-wise.
Restructure
The end result of the war was not by choice, but the necessity to survive by taking care of one's own kind. Technology was destroyed and people were dead. No one bothered to investigate the cause of the detonations, but rather, all focus was put to restructuring any remaining civilizations.
Peace
With every country fixing their own problems and staying out of everyone's business, peace returned to the Earth.
The Return of Steam
With technology gone, and traces of the silicon eating virus lingering around, most of man-kind resorts back to steam engines. However, retaining the scientific / architectural knowledge that we have gathered over time, it was almost no time before our railways were back in order and more efficiant than ever.
The next war
It was several hundred years before the population had returned to a state where we began meddeling in other's businesses. The deterioration of the virus meant we could begin using silicon chipsets again. Though, this time around, they were used to develop better steam engines and research for artificial intelligence. When war broke out again, the world sent forth steam-driven soldiers along with their human generals. The war raged on for several years until an outer-worldly threat came into play. Earth found itself on the sideline for an extra-terrestrial war. The world lay low as the war raged on for several years, illuminating our night skies. Then, one day, it was all over.
The aliens
Alien contact was made shortly after the war. The winning aliens decended upon earth to research it. They helped Earth take great leaps and strides in technology, forever putting their precious steam engines behind them. Earth gathered all their Steam Warriors and buried them under the sea floor in a giant tomb. Everything returned to peace, as Earth became a hub for space travel and part of the Galactic Alliance.
The Dominace War
Peace never lasts long. Corruption within the Alliance divided man-kind once again after hundreds of years. A galactic war has broken out consisting of civil wars on every planet and planetary system. After several decades of fighting, troops began to run low. A race on Earth began as both sides began to look for the ancient tomb that housed the Steam Warriors. The number of warriors would give an edge to the side that found them. The Axis recovered the tomb first, but didn't make off with them all, as the Alliance managed to hijack almost half. The remaining Steam Warriors were all retro-fitted with new technology, but were left with their steam engines due to lack of proper equipment. The Warriors were programmed for the sides they were taken by. Of the ones controlled by the Axis, 25 were given free will and given the ranks of 'Generals' so they could lead their steam armies.
And that brings us to today and my General, Cronus; Battelfield Tactician.
I like this model a lot. Great start, skanker. can't wait to see where you go with the texturing. A little more love on the shield model might be in order.

so like a 512 diffuse, 512 spec, 512 bump, and a 512 etc? cause that would suck in a way.
or is that a 1024 diffuse, 1024 spec, 1024 bump, 1024 etc. cause that would be cool.
Nice to see you've already started! Good luck

here are the legs that I made at home tonight:
Gotta merge it with my other file at work and proportion the legs to the body. Gotta point out the toes more, etc, etc.
Not done with the legs yet, so the design might change a little.
Working on the arms obviously. Gotta make the arm cannon next, then the royal cape and stuff.
That's going to be the polycount flag hanging off his shoulder. It should be nice and cloth simmed in our engine.
Now for unwrapping. Hopefully I'll get some time for that soon. Till then, I'm taking the weekend off.
fast work too... looking forward to seeing how this ends up
Though, I'd take some the polys from the "eyes" and use them to smooth out the gun a bit.
seriously though man, this is the tits, can't wait for the texture. the banner hangs quite majestically from the shoulder.
Keep it up!

Thanks for the comments you guys. I'll start uving him soon.
