Got the idea from cgchat. Just for kicks... haven't done any work for myself in a while. I'll try and get it to a lower count, though.

Do the swords 'grip additions'* with an alpha, loose the 'sword strap-on belt'* (and texture it), and make fists instead of open hands: voila you are in budget

*arg... to lazy to look these words up, but I guess the description should be enough.

Oh woops. Wrong polycount... the entire thing is 957 (still over), the 1084 is both figures on screen.
But yeah... I figured the hands would have to go and he'd need fists. Can try and experiment with the alpha stuff on the sword... alpha channels generally look poor when the texture is so low res. Might work at the small scale, though.
I think I'm going to keep the strap loop, though. I'd rather spend the extra polies and have a sharp looking texture for his belt.
I'm going to go for regular link.

Could be both on screen ala edit poly mode (1084 quads not tris)....not sure if maya has the same bug as max had but that makes the most sense.

Model looks kick as, cant wait to see it textured.

i would try poops single poly flat hand trick for this model if you wanted all fingers but a lower count, i think it could be pretty effective.

just texture both versions

or release an SDK of this one

Its not a bug, it counts POLYGONS if you bring out the counter from utilities it can count both polygons and triangles.
In edit mesh all polys are tris so polygon count = tri count.
