I thought it was just graphics cards getting too expensive. I never thought of getting a PS3 in the first year of its launch but if this price proves to be true, I am not sure whether I'd be interested in getting one at all.
I wish people would stop speculating on the price and just wait until it arrives. They've stated many times that it will be comparible to the 360. If it's $500, don't buy it... let them see that you aren't willing to pay that much. Unfortunately, lemmings will buy them like the idiots paying $2000 for the 360's on ebay.
Sony is banking on the fact it doubles as a blu-ray player. Seriously though. $500, for a top of the line console, and a built in blue-ray player is'nt really that bad.
You cant get a dell with comparible specs for 500 bucks, I could'nt even build one with blackmarket prices for 500 bucks. Just cause you dont have the money, does'nt mean it's not a fair price. It will drop, just be patient and buy it later. Just like ALL electronics.
BluRay players cost like $1500 i think...
Each time a new console price is announced or widely speculated people will cry how its too much and nobody will buy it etc. but then when its release you cant buy it for months because everyone wants them...
I don't know where the complaint is coming for. What did you expect? A new console featuring relatively new technology for $199?
It isn't cheap to do the R&D for these consoles. It isn't cheap to manufacture them, either. I can tell you that even at $500 Sony will be at a loss for each console sold.
If consumers are going to whine about outrageous console prices, maybe you should lessen your expectations for what new consoles can do?
The more features you want the more you're going to drive the prices up for your product. It's just like any other electronic product out there.
Quite so. I can't play games on a GeForce 7800 alone. And the XBox360 came out at approximately $500 over here, so that price tag sounds perfectly appropriate.
It's not the "casual gamers" who buy the thing when it's first released anyway - it's the hardcore gamers, and the rich parents with 10- to 15-year-old kids. The casual gamer will wait till the price drops and more games are released, with a decent round up of reviews, before they go for the console, so no, it's not likely that they'll pay $500 immediately, but they will pay $400 after 6 months or less.
It is just an estimate of what they think the price will be. Stuff will change before the PS3 comes out..god knows when..but I think it'll be in the range of 400-475$ in the States.
Being in the 500$ range will unfortunatly turn off a lot of people to the console..and would be bad for game sales
$500/£280 to be among the first to buy a console positively bristling with incomprehensibly advanced microchips that will last you for the next 5-7 years? Nightmare!
fuck me, a decent scalextric set will set you back over a hundred quid ...
Considering that sony are currently laying off staff around the world in large numbers, the UK price could be anywhere from £250 to £500. I think $500 is the low end estimate, I expect it to be much higher.
Take all the bells and whistles off and you might find a games console under there
Aye, we could end up with the special electronics manufacturer exchange rate of 1$=1=1£. Amazon try to pull the same stunt, a $12 CD on amazon.com costing £12 on amazon.co.uk
I don't think it's a matter of us hardcore gamers and developers shelling out 500$ I mean we all hang out on a video game related messeage board what else are we gonna do with our money ..but for my parents both of which have been playing video games since Atari 500$ is just to much in these times of rising prices and shrinking paychecks .
I'll start comparing Console and PC component prices when consoles become as versatile as the PC. The PC costs more buck but it gives more bang as well (how many of you ever got a custom model into a console game? Maybe Gauss if you count Churchill as a custom model).

True enough, they are very different. Gamewise, I've gotten much more enjoyment out of my PS2 than my PC
If you like both of 'em the consoles still provide more great games and more variety in genres (perhaps because japanese devs almost never make PC games?) than the PC while the PC often provides more longetivity per title (mods!) and some superior solutions (save anywhere, freely configurable controls, mouselook, etc).

And because of that a PS3 is a must have for me, even if that
beast is expensive i know what im getting for my money. So
disapointing the last year was for PC gamers.
What are they getting at? So it has "Conceptual Design" written under it so they jump on it and say that PS3 as a console was just a design excercise??
What the lable means is that the final product will propably not look 100% like the one on the stand but will most likely follow the theme set by it.
Is that so hard to understand or am i missing the point of the article?

Seriously, no need for speculation yet. 500$ is cheap considering to what the PS2 and Xbox went for anyway...

What, 280 quid? Thats less than the PS2 or Xbox debuted at, and the shop price of the Xbox 360.

this is what i thought

That's what I am always doing.
For highend gaming I have my PC, which is much better at it anyways.

Ditto.
It's not like you don't have a computer.
