The Dungeon Crawl. Any asset, item, weapon, character, monster, environment from a dungeon crawler game (Diablo, Zelda, Dungeon Siege, etc).
We should also consider getting the content compiled into a playable game no matter what the theme. It kinda happened with the halloween theme.
just to echo what i said in that other thread... some kind of organic or oganic-mechanical mix gun
i'll toss out that i'd like to avoid any character modelling, as cgchat has been binging on it (last ten or so challenges have been character models), but the idea of an alien creature would be kind of neat (have the challenge specify a few different alien environments that the creatures could live in).
I like cholden's idea, but if we do something like that let's nail down a particular game for it to fit into (like dungeon siege or final fantasy) and include a plethora of screenshots of the game in question.
or we could do cars and like ram said, i'll just kick ass and chew bubblegum... oh, and would you look at that, i'm all outta bubblegum.
low poly race car with track. any kind of race or vehicle allowed. could be creative.
OR...a specific type of racecar (but creativity allowed in design), allowing for neat paint schemes, and one person builds the track to render them racing. the best ones determine position on the track, winner crossing the finish line.
design your own transformer, it can be anything, a car, a cell phone, a can of pop.
[11:25:43] <Marine> and it has to transform too
[11:26:19] <Marine> oh, and you get disqualified if you don't submit a video of it tranforming with the transforming sound
I like to see compilations of works as well, but I must confess this recent regression towards more ultra-low poly work irks me a little. I understand its quick and its fun, and it probably gets more participation.
Just because CGchat is doing chars & hipoly/normal-map challenges, doesn't mean we cannot.
Personally, I think a highpoly challenge is long overdue here. That elementals challenge we had before was good, but how many finished entries did we get?
I think some kind of staged challenge would be better.
Is it that difficult to arrange some kind of prize? (Im not attempting to be dickish, Im genuinly asking)
First a 1 week for concept, a 3 week span for High Poly model..another 1 week for final execution (low poly with normals & diffuse/spec applied), etc.
It's this kinda stuff that'll help the rest of us who aren't planning on making PSP & DS games forever.
I just want to create. I wanted to join the last, but the handheld specs kinda turned me away. Not that they're low, just the strict guidelines. I just want to make whatever crazy idea pops into my head.
high poly contests aren't as fun, and get less participants (thus making it less fun). and it puts a limitation on creativity sometimes.
just a fun idea that gets the community excited about working along side others is all it takes, all system specs and game fanboys aside.
we could take a different path with a 10 second animation contest. or, a special FX one. some of use would have to help with hosting, and it excludes those without animation software.
scoobdoo: we did a high detail a few months ago. It was the Normal Mapped Mega-Weapon challenge. I was the only one that submitted. :P
CMB: technically, psp and ps2 specs are pretty much the same (if you have a good programmer). Details are bumped up slightly for the larger screen.
Racing game could be fun. I had a lot of fun doing vehicles and driving levels on my last game. If we go that route, it'd be great for someone to research a game engine were we could easily drop in our content (track, vehicles), and come up with some easy specs we can follow.
Actualy...I Changed my mind.
I have to agree with fuse about a trs challenge.
Most new rts games allow you to use 500-750 polys for characters and 1000+ for buildings .
But we could make it like older rts games and have lowpolygon specs.
There everyones happy.
gmax? yes, quite easy when you're using an expired tool.
HOW ABOUT COMPLETE 8 WEAPON REPLACEMENT SET FOR q1 IN MD3 FROMAt11! (Axe, Shotgun, Double Shotgun, Nailgun, Super Nailgun, Grenade Launcher, Rocket Launcher, Lightning Gun (thunderbolt). No directly following the original concepts)
or a gargoyle contest yes those are fun hinthinthint
or, a "robot master" contest maybe (mentioned this in november)
The problem with doing the hi-poly stuff is that this board is for "challenges" and not "contests". If we did a contest for a first, second, and third place standing then that might generate more interest and participation.
And how bout no REAL CARS, you have to come up with your own design. Modeling a real car(probably from blueprints that are easy to find) Would seem less like a "challenge" and more like a "chore" to me.
[04:39] <EarthQuake> you know, maybe even loosen it to "Unique Vehicle with 2k and lod"
[04:39] <EarthQuake> then we could see a much bigger range of ideas
[04:39] <flaagan> eq.. hells yah. post that
it would also be necessary to have an option to texture these instruments, since I can imagine what kind of awesome normal maps or high poly goodness these guys can come up with.

some fast psp/ds scene would be cool, like trying to follow some kind of storytelling/cutscene stuff

I really got a kick out of the polycountville contest, seeing everyone's stuff thrown together. Got a pretty big response, too.

Lets just do a PS2 spec challenge because the ps2 is going to be dead soon.
What the theme is I don't care,just ps2 specs.

my idea: Redesign a game, character or scene from a 'normal'/modern game, only with the DS specs.

2k car with 500 poly counterpart
how about a LOD challenge?

Really like the LOD idea too.
just had a thought: polycount "scrapheap challenge"!! (junkyard challenge)

you mean like "make whatever you want, but outta junk"?
redesign a fave game character, or something similar
Well, we have 12 days to go on this one ladies, come on lets see some action!!
Hawken: PM coming your way.
because it's a no-brainer "remaek your favorite!!!" thing.
not only that but the deadline is pretty far away for a low poly project allowing most of the most lazy modelers to get the job done in time
Deer, fish, birds, Rhino's, anteaters, etc?
Plenty of options for everybody & plenty of references readily available.
Or perhaps we could do a low-poly likeness challenge?
I just like challenges that could be valuable learning & practice for our members.
"remake an old 80's game character in a modern stylee"

I think CGtalk has done that twice, i know i joined one. Didn't we do that here once? Didn't CGchat do it once? In other words, no thank you.
Please hold on the next challenge. I have something in the works. heee hee heeeee. =]

challenge ideas are on hold folks
