Yeah, I saw this a couple of days ago, it's crazy... the guy almost runs over someone at a couple of points. Obviously it's been done at some silly hour in the morning during the Summer, so that it's light, but there's nobody (except bin lorries/whatever you Americans call them - refuse trucks?) around at that time.
Early in the morning though it is, I just don't get how he doesn't pass one *single* cop in all that time. Do French cops not get out of bed til late or something?
I'm not entirely sure it's genuine. The engine and braking sounds are sometimes off a bit. There are times that the car is moving really slow, but the engine is reving super high, and the brakes are skidding like mad. Also, for all of the brake skids I hear, the car doesn't slide at all..
I could have sworn that there was a movie like this before, but it turned out to be someone on a bike or something. Some kind of trickery, anyways.
Vassago, after reading the comments on the sites linked there, it sounds like the engine noises were dubbed afterwards.
I'd say it's definitely a car though, just take a look at the section where he maneuvres round a garbage truck (thanks Eric!) and the woman flattens herself up against the wall - if he was on a motorbike, he'd have just sailed through that gap - it'd be a bit of a squeeze for a car though.
If he had killed someone, I doubt it would have been released...or 10 minutes long. :P It is stupid, even for 1978...and the French. And if it was done today, it would be blamed on video games.
I think it was him in his Mercedes, and later overdubbed with a Ferrari in order to keep his identity secret as being the driver. The engine sound isn't what gives it away because it can be done with a manual transmission...but the tire skidding sounds excessive. I'm also just guessing that since the camera, and I'm assuming the mic, are mounted on the front of the car, and at the high speeds driven, the sound of the squeeling would vary in pitch.
There's one of these vids, or a few actually about an hour long. The most well known one has a Porsche 911 and it is most definately real. The guy gets pulled over by the cops and then runs...very exciting I can't remember what it's called or where to get it, but if you look hard enough it should still be about. There was also a sweet one with a Toyota Supra and a Ford Cosworth doing 300km/h+
Cool stuff. I could tell by the end that this was done in the 1970s.
I got a lot out of the commentary from Jerry Kindall's page, and the comments where everyone second-guesses the production is hilarious. Chariots of the Gods, baby.
Yeah. I don't care if people think the audio is dubbed, or it's a fake in some way. It just feels good, like it was a helluva a lot of fun and white knuckles.

Impressive driving... completely insane
I love the squealing tires. And the red lights. Balls of steel!

Would this be even nearly as cool if he had hit and killed someone? Or would everyone be talking about what an idiot this guy is?

I assume you have never seen Getaway in Stockholm or Ghost Rider flicks? This one is really mild by comparisson.
