It's hard to believe Sony is still moving along.
The PS2 is a crappy piece of hardware, and often times defective. Somehow it grabs lots of games. Sony recently apologizes for making crap. It now apologizes for this rootkit incident. Their profits are sorry. I don't think they've even made a profit off the PS2, and are shutting down their CRT plants, yet are still able to push the PS3 with misleading tech demos. They're lucky they have the Spiderman films keeping them on top, and a marketing team to compete with the "just as much bullshit" marketing team over at Microsoft.
Film is the only thing keeping sony going, I think? Just look at all the movies they have for the PSP, which was pitched as a hand held gaming machine. But its more like a portable UMD movie device that happens to have a few really bad games.
So what are the chances this will affect other game copy protection. It would be very nice if this lead to some kind of protection to make sure that the consumer is not sold a game that just wont work in their system because of some half baked copy protection (take note UbiSoft).
It appears that the shite really is hitting the fan for sony atm, I am not a sony hater at all, but hope that if such a big and established company back down that all those other shade ones think twice (Yes that means you again UBISOFT and any users of starforce) and that this kind of ripoff where the user gets nonfunctioning goods and no return because they have broken the seal before reading the EULA etc...
Not that it pisses me off at all, but 50$ each for IV prince of persia and farcry all not working because of the DVD burner being blacklisted by their copyprotection really makes me concider waiting for them in a dark alle with a baseball bat, a bunch of KY jelly and all their non functional crap so everything can be put back where it should be
