just as a small addtion to your tut i thought i would rundown what i use them mostly for..
one of the basic principals of color is warm colors advance and cool colors recede.. so to spice up any composition i throw down a gradient map that goes from the coolest of colors blue, to 50% grey to the warmest of colors yellow.. then set the gradient layer to overlay.. the grey will preserve any inital color you laid down and the colors will add depth and color variation to the piece.. i also back way off the opasity just to hint at the color.. not actually take the piece over with it..
