No, I think basically los wants to select one edge out of an edge loop, hit a button, and have it chamfer (split) the whole edge loop.
Personally I just have CTRL-F bound to Select Loop (and CTRL-R for Select Ring), and just hit that when I select an edge. Perfectly quick enough for my needs...
I wish max woudl let you customise more: In Silo I double click an edge and it selects the loop and CTRL-ALT-Left selects the ring. I also have keyboard shortcuts.
Now, a GREAT plugin for max would be a tweak mode - I miss it so much at work.
apologies for my lameness guys,
I got it the plugin to work I forgot to place a file in the right folder.
scroll to the bottom, you'll see what I mean. http://www.maya3d.dk/Scripts/MJPolyTools/
it basically does what mop is describing, with one click though
rick- that would be sweet, custom make your own tweaks to tools for those that dont use max script.
Simply double the loop with any technique you want (chanfer, connect ring, whatever) and move the resulting loop towards the edge using the 'slide' command from the meshtools+cspolytools pack. Fast and easy to control!

mj poly tools had it for 7 but, I tryed it for 8 and it didnt work. It may be something I did wrong I'll try it again.
It would work with chamfer, I'd have to selet edge, select loop then chamfer. I'll use that for the time being.
thanks

so with a single click, you can pinch an edge that runs down a long curvy distance, like the seem on some pants or something.
*ahem* xsi..
as far as just spliting the edge inthe center, max will do this quickly.
1. select an edge
2. press alt+r to select an edge ring
3. press ctrl+shift e by default i think to edge connect.
