My next favorite Table Top game

warmachine.jpg

A friend of mine pointed me to the Warmachine site today and I fell in love. It happens anytime you mix big mechs and a steam-punkish universe, I can't help it.
I took an hour or so to boil down some of thier images into desktop backgrounds. So far from what I have heard it's easy to setup/play and rules are pretty much "play like you have a pair". Something most table top gamers don't do, they try to hide and force you into some kind of obvious ambush by refusing to move. At least that is the last couple of games I played agaist strangers in a local store.

The prices on most of this stuff are better than GamesWorkshop minitures(which is out of control), and they are all metal.

Even if you are not into table top gaming check out some of the concept art its pretty cool. Also this paint site they link to has some good tutorials that I think apply to making textures just as well as painting minitures.

I was prepared to sat "Warmachine? Wtf, you have to be kidding me", but after checking out the website it reminds me of why I got into Warhammer. Cool looking characters, great miniatures, and great paint jobs. Now to play Warhammer 40K you have to pay a fortune for a bunch of plastics, and paint at least 25 dudes (and oftentimes 60 or more). When I first got into Warhammer it was at the tail end of 1st edition and everything seemed so cool. With the third edition stuff all of that coolness had been neutured out.

Ninjas: You realize that you can just use a bunch of coins or something (round pieces of paper?) instead of official miniatures? Battletech, for example, comes with a few cardboard cutouts. Sure, it looks poor but it's cheap.

i've always liked the warmachine designs, alltho after playing a bit of warhammer fantasy tabletop here recently i've grown to like the plastic figures better than the metal ones. they are much more durrable, you barely bump 2 mettal ones togeterh and the paint nicks off of them like a motha

i used coins and cutouts for battletech for a bit, its really just not the same as having even a cheap plastic mini or a metal one.

So glad i stayed away from buying any expensive warhammer sets...:)

I was always oriented towards the art aspect of the hobby, and the game aspect came second. Second, but still important.

Okay, I'll come clean. I had to give up Warhammer because I spent literally thousands of dollars (over the course of many years) and inumerable hours on it. I stopped cold turkey and will probably never play a tabletop game again.

Mech games are better in terms of the number of miniatures you need. I thought Heavy Gear was pretty tight with some slight modifications to the rules.

i was thinking about making a night goblin army for warhammer, untill i realize it would take close to 1000 models to complete my army, and i was not about to do that..

so i went with ogres and poof, army of only 30 models!

I have enough unpainted orks, necron, and dark eldar miniatures in my closet to feed the entire city's homeless! Mmm, plastic. So it's annoying to see that pic, and think, "wow, I need to buy some of those." I promise I'll paint them this time, momma, and feed them, and take them for walks every day!
