So has there been any change to the way hair is handled on high poly modles or is it still just stuck to the head or transparent planes?
Also, has anyone tried to model long curly hair? Like a greek god with a curling iron fixation?
Well, in that case as a normalmap is just a texture (it can be either painted or created with a highpolygon template), you do it just as you would do it with any other low-polygon model
P.S.: Curls can be made, but real models curls use too many polygons. But it can be faked by using a alpha-mapped 'curls-texture' on a few polygons (but it looks quite flat unfortionally)

For the latter special hair-plugins are used that usually work with particles.
