i spent a little time reading these boards, and have noticed that it's mostly for 3D artists. I would like to get into the video games industry but am not sure where to start. I E-mailed Ensemble Studios about one of their job postings 2 days ago (i knew i didnt have half the Qualifications, but was hoping to get some info anyway which i did) they E-mailed me back sayin they dont have any Entry Level spots, but "you could work on mods to get going, check out polycount to start finding mod teams that need people". So on their advice i came here today, and am wondering if there is anyone who could help me get started.

Well i did Webpages, using Notepad and HTML code. Then, a few years later I got my Dreamweaver MX package and have been using that. I am good at Dreamweaver MX, FLash MX, PhotoShop, Premier (Video/slide show Edititing), and a 3d programs where we made basic models (cant remember name). I was top of my class in Multimedia. I got a 98% at grade 11 and a 80% at grade 12, i also was asked to be a Peer tutor there by the teacher. I am not entirely sure what area i want to do, i enjoyed multimedia, but i am not a very good artist, but yet i also have code experience from HTML so maybe coding... lol i figured i might try both a little see and which fit best.

i would buy, doom2, ut2k4, halflife2 and get to modding, doing every tutorial you can get your hands on.. and there are millions.. there are a ton at 3dbuzz.com.. you dont really have to be good at art to do basic world creation stuff(notice i said basic!! so all you enviroment artist dont butt rape me over the internet!!) reason i say this is that i know some pretty decent environment artist that cant draw a lic.. but obviously any artistic knowledge will help..if you want to code you might want to brush up something other than html. maybe visual basic, or java, but i think some c++ knowledge would be best.. find some scripting tutorials for an engine and do those.. there are just so many areas you could go in, you really have to just explore them all.. its a long road. but if you really want to do it then the time goes by pretty fast.. just dont expect to be doing anything professionally for a few years, expecially if you have never even made a mod before..

Carl -- you e-mailed Ensemble, does that mean you live in the Dallas area?

I wouldn't compare HTML skills to programming skills. There are similarities, but a multimedia background isn't going to get you very far in coding. There are plenty of 'how to' programming books around for cheap, you should try it out and see if that's for you.

some studios often specify that they are not looking for html monkeys, so unless you are seriously interested in mkiang games I would possible look elswhere than the ganes industry. at the moment all you seem to be saying is that you have a vague interest in making it in the games industry.

How baout special fx or coding GUI?
