Maya 6.5 ASE exporter. Riddle me this.

The air conditioning is broken and its like a sauna in here so forgive me if my slowly broiling brain has missed something stupidly obvious here, but I can't seem to get the Maya 6.5 ASE file exporter to work.
When I try to start it in the plug-in manager Maya comes up with an error message saying "The Operation Completed Successfully" and doesn't activate. I've tried the obvious things - restarting, poking about in the mel file and whatnot but its not going to start for me.
I've tried putting the files in both the program files/maya directory where it installs by default and in the my documents/Maya/6.5 folder without any success.
Any clues?
