Map types(3dsmax7)

I'm getting interested in all these kinds of maps availible today.
When I paint I just use the traditional diffuse and opacity maps.
All other ones seem to be a mystery to me.
Except for the ones made with the nvida normal map filter that I try to paint in photoshop.
Is there a list of where I can find out how to make and what different maps do?
Wich ones can be done with photoshopcs,3dsmax6&7 with a wacom and a mouse.
Feel free to post links and pictures and stuff.
