In 3Dmax7 with Edit Mesh if I right click to properties and get the poly count and then add an edit poly modifier it cuts the triangle count in half. Whazzup with dis? What is the correct count? thanks
thanks sean, Polycount's do still matter Rick; when someone needs a model bulit in under a certain amount of tris or polys you don't want to send a 5000 poly character to someone who asked for a 2000.

It can count triangles or polygons.
In 7 it gives you both in the utility one, I don't think other version do that. You can also get a plugin that always gives you the right tri count.
Polycounts mean very little in todays games to be honest.

the 7 key, by default is assigned to "poly counter" and will display your face count in your viewport at the top left.
you can assign a key to "tri counter" for a more useful polycount display.
left is "poly counter" right is "tri counter":
