Opportunities for artists at Acheron Design Melbourne

(For a brief, colourful overview, go here: http://acheron-design.net/Acheron-Artist-Job.pdf)

Acheron Design, a Melbourne-based game development studio, is currently recruiting artists for an upcoming commercial PC game. We are looking for talented 2D and 3D artists to join our energetic team. Ideally, candidates will live in Melbourne, Australia.

Required skills:
- High polygon 3D modelling skills
- Good texturing ability
- Experience with Adobe Photoshop or similar
- Dedication and Commitment
- A Good Sense of Humour
Gaming experience is considered beneficial but is not required. The ability to draw concept art is desirable.

The position does not command a salary, [edit - but those who contribute will get their fair share of any royalties]. However, it will provide real world experience. Furthermore, Acheron Design expects to employ team members following the release of our first title in 2006. Acheron Design is understanding of work, study, and family commitments.

About Us:
Acheron Design is an independent game development studio based in Melbourne. For information, visit our website at http://acheron-design.net

About The Project:
The game in development is a vertical scrolling shooter. It is similar in many respects to games such as Raiden, Raptor, Tyrian, Gigawing, Ikaruga, etc. Our artists will be required to model and texture high polygon renditions of:
- Spaceships (including bosses)
- Combat vehicles (tanks, trucks, etc)
- Combat buildings (turrets, etc)
- Civilian buildings
- Landscape details (trees, rocks, etc)
In addition, art will be required for the following game components
- Ingame HUD components
- Menu screens

The game has been in development for some time now, and is well advanced. The game is developed using Acheron Design's proprietary 2D game technology.

Screenshots of the pre-alpha release, though not "publicly" available, can be found here:

Well, perhaps it wasn't made clear, but artists get paid along with the rest of us -- when we actually start selling games. Until then, we are simply expending money keeping the studio afloat. Nobody in Acheron is drawing a salary, nor do we receive any royalties. However, anyone who helps in the production of a commercial product will definitely get their share of royalties, and we do intend to hire an artist fulltime once we have sufficient cashflow.

A 2d shooter, eh? I hope you're very good at the genre because that's the market with the strongest competition. Understandable, considering everyone with some programming language and a few days of spare time can get the foundations for one done and since we're not in the 486 age anymore even badly done code or script languages won't cause a big performance hit. The japanese indy scene throws these games out a dime a dozen so best of luck to you and may your unique hook bring in the masses.

ah, everyone shares royalties. Then my mistake. The original post could probably use clarification on that.

I'll vouch that this project is looking really good so far - the mechanics are really solid and even at this early stage it feels far better than a lot of those aforementioned indi shooters.
